AVY into AFH

Reason for this thread is the AVY/AFH is becoming more and more popular but on the otherhand there are issues with doing it eg. drilling block, using different head bolts etc.

I would like some one write a definintive guide on using the avy internals in the afh block to creat a longer stroke, what parts are needed and the pro's and cons..

This would help alot of people out and including me as i have the trusty old smokey afh in the polo atm and a complete 1.6 avy bottom end in the garage and could kill two birds with one stone if i can cure the smoke and up the power abit when replacing the rings .

Their is everything you need in the FAQs. Takes some reading yes, I read 5 of the 10 pages lastnight and ran out of time. But theirs everything you need in there, just a lot of reading. I know its not a spoon feeding guide but reading through you do pick up on everyones problems and solutions. Edit : I see you've seen the thread. My bad!

The faq's are just confusing.

We need to know what parts 100% work together and what dont.

So. If u have an afh block and avy block, can you literally swap over the avy crank and pistons but keep the afh pistons to make a high compression 1.6, or can u deffo use the avy pistons ect.

Theres alot of talk about doing it but i haven't seen evidence of it working.

Mikeys info is good, but at the same time he was using bits from a golf engime ect so it doesent count completely

It would be helpful is someone who has done the engine conversion who can identify to people,like Eric said what do and don't work, Just to make it simple for everyone to do the job!

Dunno where the topic is, but i believe it's called something like 'AVY GTi block mit AFH 16v head' and yes it's mit or something instead of with. I can't search atm i'm on the shitter and in a hurry to get back out to the girls..

You just change the bare blocks Eric, that's it, the whole AVY guts go in the AFH block they're engineered identical apart from the problem bits. Then just build it up as an AFH from the outside.

I have been wondering this too.

My understanding was:

Try and get a late AFH with a direct drive pump.

Fit AVY crank, pistons and rods

Done. Doesn't that make around 11.5:1 compression at that?

Then if you fitted AFH pistons instead around 12.3:1?

Also, if your AFH has a chain driven oil pump, can't you not just fit the direct one to suit the crank? Doesn't this bolt up the same as the oil seal housing anyway?

Also sounds silly but what rings do u use ? Guessing AVY although I'm sure Guy said they were the same, not labled the same tho as AVY's are 85 and AFH are 55 quid.

I've done a few engines and i forget the odd detail, but some (i think only the aluminium blocks) needed threads tapping for chain drive pump.

No matter that's irrelevant. Doesn't matter what AFH you have, gut it of everything and fit full AVY into it, it goes. It's that easy, i keep saying so but people keep using the AVY block and having nightmares with stretchy head bolts and rubbish pulleys, just use a 1.4 6n block with your AVY/ARC already! Problems solved!

Rings must match the pistons as thicknesses vary, everything else is shared.

Pulley must key as a tight fit to the crank, AVY/ARC ones take the AFH belt so just keep the GTi pulley.

1.6 ARC/AVY internals in any 1.4 casting basically. With new gti rings.

Alternatively the above but with AFH pistons for a mad compression ratio.

So you can put the afh head on a arc/avy bottem end inc internals with a arc/avy headgasket with 1.0 headbilts fine, correct me if I'm wrong skim reading in work, with the idler pully etc work aswell

Basicly .. you take a afh engine, take a avy bottom end, Strip the internals out of the AVY bottom end. Wack it in the AFH block.. Jobs a gudden

Yes.

You're basically fitting the AFH head and cams to a ARC/AVY bottom end.

You need the ARC/AYV HG and AER Headbolts (1.0) these are M9 - Torque to 30nm + 90 degrees + another 90 degrees.

You'll need a way of fitting the 8mm holed relay roller to the 10mm threaded hole in the block, either drilling it or a stud making up - although the last attempt snapped IIRC !

True. This thread is basically about how to stroke an AFH to be a 1.6 instead of a 1.4, but what you asked about an AFH head on an AVY was correct yes, as it says in the guide in the FAQ

You can even use the ally cylinder block for low stress engines (standard AFH) but i found they couldn't cope with the very high compression version of the 1.6 AFH's. I built two, using known-good blocks, and they both smoked. I believe the bores were flexing. Shame VW didn't use steel bores like some ally block engines have (such as the daughter's 206 1.4).

Iron are all good, my best ever engine was the guts of a Golf 1.6 16v bottom end in an AFH block. The Golf bottom end was the same as the AVY's but for smaller inlet valve recesses in the pistons.

It has been mentioned somewhere that it can only be re-fitted a number of times, due to damaging the threads for the caps. I think it was Heg123 after i asked him if he'd considered an ally block for rallying.

I don't know about that but i figure that it could be overcome by using seperate studs and nuts, because they're not stretch bolts.

I didn't have a problem though..
