Yeah, mrs is pretty cool with these things. When you've got the smell of nappies around the house, an acute scent of engine oil is no problem.. :-D

so I'm gonna get an afh block, but its completely bare. does EVERYTHONG from the avy fit? including the crank breather and coolant pipe on the rear ect??

Afh rings are the same

Rings vary, it's easy to get caught out. I swear i've found different thickness rings in two different AFH's.

Just make sure they're the right thickness (you'll know).

Now then, this has given me a thought about a problem engine i know of..

Problem engine? Would that be mine per chance? Lol

i suspect either my rings are gone or i have a cracked head.

I left oil in the bores for about 4 days however and all was well. Wierd lol

Can't comment on them varying, all I know is the afh rings I bought from eBay were the same thickness' as listed for the avy rings on the net and they seemed to fit just fine when I sloted them in the gaps to check

I've read the FAQ quite a few times on this but there is conflicting info and people posting with problems with the head bolts etc....

Anyway from what I've read so far there is 2 ways of doing it:

1. Stroke the 1.4 to a 1.6 by using a BARE AFH Block, Head and ancillaries (With Oil Driven Pump) but put the AVY bottom end (Crank, Pistons, Rods etc.) into it.

- As Harris.Racing said does that make it around 11.5:1 compression with the AVY Pistons?

- Also as Harris.Racing said if you fit the AFH pistons does the compression then increase up to 12.3:1?

OR

2. Use the AVY Block with all ancillaries BUT with a AFH head ? Then you use AVY headgasket, idler drilled out to clearance for M10 (iirc) and 1.0 AER headbolts.

What compression ratio does this give you?

Is this right :? ??

Just a quick question more to Mikey

On the alloy blocks is there room to bore them out and fit steel liners

Might turn out to e expensive if possible but could be worth it in te weight loss

I take it there is quite a difference between a steel cast block and an alloy one

^^ I've thought about it briefly yes, and i'm sure it'd be possible. The ally block head gasket should be fine in such a case.

But i ran the ally block immediately after the iron one, nothing else had really changed, and i was doing a 55 mile a day commute - you'd think i noticed one hell of a difference, wouldn't you? Nope, almost no gain. A fraction more response in the steering, that's about it. And i had to chop standard springs down because the front was up higher, yet no real benefit detected in handling or engine/braking performances.

I didn't really like it. There was a certain something made me want iron back, beyond the ally blocks both being smokers of course. A certain quality had gone, a solidarity of ride quality perhaps. Steel bores may sort the smoke but i don't know if i'd bother again even then.

Avy block has oil squrters so if your after high power.... Get a pulley drilled and block drilled for different head bolts, fairly easy with a depth stop and pillar drill on a level drill bed or engineering shop.

Just to follow up on this, I'm weighing up engine options and have the following "proposal"

AVY bottom end - block, pistons, rods, crank (obviously direct drive oil pump)

Drilled block to convert to M11 head bolts

Drilled relay roller

AFH head (is it even worth getting this flowed?)

Cams (no regrinds, proper cams)

CBR 600 Carbs

Mappable ignition

When rebuild all the bottom end will be balanced, and will have a lightened mk3 fly.

Unsure on cams, had a look at Schrick and there's a wide choice,

I want decent bottom end but still the top end pull of a 16v...there's a 290 or 292 Group H rally cam kit which comes with new springs and stronger valves and such, but that's listed at nearly €1800.

Also, what is the compression ratio of a AVY bottom with an AFH head? Got the feeling it's 11:1?

Katcams do a set nick, 600 quid with all the kit etc.

Not the highest of lifts but I'm sure you can ask etc :)

You using the AVY block for the squirters?

From what I've read up on too the heads seem to be very well flowed.

Maybe dude. Don't know what to expect; don't know what cams to get or anything, be properly pissed off if bottom end is boring!
