Running Hybrid 1.6 AFH on orignial injection

Featured Replies

Hello all, long time no post

My AFH Head /GTi bottom end hybrid currently runs on CBR600's with a facet fuel pump, makes great power but last winter its reluctance to start make me late for work a lot

So my question is can I run it on injection using a standard AFH ECU- the original inlet manifold and maybe GTi injectors?

Engine is currently in a mk3 so is it just a case of getting power to the new ECU? What would be the best setup in terms of fuel pumps? Cant remember if mk4 polos are intank pumps - if so would I be better off finding a GT/G40 external pump and would this be up to the job?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated :-)

Dan

100% possible mate.

People use the AFH injection stuff, I think guy maybe uses a golf fuel pump but not sure.

There's a lean point midrange with the AFH injectors I believe. People have tried the (blue) Gti ones I think, but I think most are running AFH ones.

It's been asked a few times, think you'll need to check out Guys old build threads, Higgo also done this among a few others. Guessing you have the ancillaries from your AFH still or something?

Christ that was quick nick!

I've got loads if bits knocking around including some Gti injectors somewhere I think. Not savvy on the actual wiring up of the ECU so not looking forward to that!

Gona try to be around a bit more this coming season - hopefully in my new mk2 bready with all the toys from my mk3 :-)

Not fancy selling your engine?

Been uming and arrring for bout 6 months now what to do with it but I think I have a plan coming together :ninja:

Gay.

But anyway have a browse around, I know searching is a nightmare man but it's been asked a few times pretty recently :) wiring is the fun part but i can't imagine it being too bad, be worth doing a search over Guys posts as he's responded to this many times before ;)

Never thought id see the day where I got the standard "do a search" answer :-( mainly because I try not to ask stupid questions :-D

This is what happens when your out of the loop for a few months lol

Nick I only used a golf gti fuel pump because it was the only high flow pump I had at the time and that was on my old 1.4. My 1.6 ran a GT fuel pump setup

The blip in the power graphs where they are said to suffer from a lean misfire is also apparent on graphs from 1.4's so I'd say its more a problem with the standard map than a consequence of stroking to 1.6 (poloace used to do chips that smoothed this blip out but he's stopped trading now). Skodaboy said he tried the gti injectors but it didn't perform as well or something (might of been in his post in the 1.6 FAQ thread), tbh I never had an issue with the AFH injectors tho

Do you have much to do with Brett? I think he wired in Ollys AFH injection on his breadvan so he might be able to help you out

All makes sense guy, who's actually running a chipped ECU on theirs? Anyone?

My ECU is chipped but i don't have the engine fitted yet

Mine's never had a reluctance to start in winter..?

Jez ran his old 6N with a 1.6 AFH conversion on the standard engine management system, though he used the 6N2 GTI injectors in it. Ran and drove very well. Decent dyno plots and economy too, with no meltage or blowing up. He sold the setup to a lad called Dunn on here about 6 years ago now, seem to remember the only problem was it ate gearboxes.

Mine starts.. Its all about how the choke is used tbf..

Nice tug, Lock off. Turn key tiny bit of revs let off and can sit there idling away at 1.5k whilst i de ice car haha ..

Mine started below -10 last winter tbh

x2. No issues with the cold so far, seems to start first turn with the choke.

Still not setup, mind. People have bikes that use them every day..

Dan yours was "setup" at Steve Walfords wasn't it?

he didnt actually do anything to my carbs tbf as i said i balanced them and had them 2 screws out etc.. Set timing

*nick balanced them ;)

Tbh all was done with your and Toby's was a flat out fuelling check and an ignition tweak - motorsports place at the end of the day, part throttle maybe mega rich or lean, never know. I find if you have a seperate switch for coil, cranking with it off then turning it on draws a little extra fuel in before trying to ignite it, like a super rich choke. Tends to help mine occasionally, but generally it's fine.

I have no idea what was wrong with it, it would turn over fine and half started but sounded like it was running on 2 cylinders and wouldnt pick up for love nor money no matter what you did with the choke/ accelerator pedal. I just got fed up of it in the end. Yeh was jetted and set up by steve walford and it started and ran fine in the summer

Anyone ever thought of re-designing the oem AFH inlet manifold? It seems quite restrictive as standard with the big curves? Or does that create a vortex of some kind sucking in more air? Wouldnt it be more effective to have 4 tubes with injectors mounted in them going to a plenum then a massive throttle body on the end. Would allow for turboing at a later date?

Have you got an AFR gauge fitted dan?

Itll be more cost effective getting to the bottom of why its not wanting to start in the cold, instead of going for the injection route!

I told you at the time patience is key Daniel, I'm sure we could improve it with a few tweaks, if I try and rev mine or blip throttle from cold it'd hesitate/cut out; takes a few seconds to calm itself down

If you wanted to be pedantic, it'd be more financially beneficial to go injection. You could convert to injection for less than the price of a semi decent wide band, then sell on the carb stuff for plenty of scene tax. So save money on the wide band and make money on the carbs at the same time as making the car more reliable

So yeah it would be more cost effective to go injection

I agree with guy tbh
