You do know there's a 200hp+ AFH in the uk right? Lol

It was more the fact that it had the original ecu and no other work than the inlet and cams. And it statrs in all kinds of weather, incl -20C

Yes I know the one. But that is fare from on std management.

No problem with 200bhp+, you need the money and the knowledge. But i dont think that was the purpose of this thread.

I got the same sort of power by bolting an AVY bottom end on to a standard AFH, only cost me around £200 to do it to my afh, gave me shit loads of torque too. When you compare the two routes (which it what briscoe will be doing) it should make some good power

Will be interesting to see how briscoes engine compares with oem injection compared to the bike carbs if he does go in that direction

There is that for those of us interested to see the results. On here with AFH's we've seen stock 1.4s go to 130 on carbs, and 1.6s go to 140 on injection but I don't know about 1.6s on carbs, especially compared like for like. Different cars measured on different rollers with the odd different exhaust etc only helps to a point.

I really should've got mine on rollers when it was at it's best, i won't have an AFH head at Aldon in feb but i might go back to one if it transpires that i've taken as much of a step backwards as the drive back from the MoT garage suggests..

mikey briscoes was 156 on carbs i believe? and on another set of rollers it was also around 156 iirc

Briscoe has more than just a set of carbs tho, head work, cams, even vernier pulleys I believe?

Well if that's anything to go by then mine wasn't insured

He's got a sorted exhaust and worked head though iirc, probably only gonna loose 10-15bhp going to efi, me thinks.

yeah guy.

tbh though, for all that work, i would have thought itd make more power.

then again, craigs (bilco) 1.4 afh made less power than it should have been with cams!

(awaits harris to tell us off for chasing numbers) lol

Does headwork make an AFH head worse or something? Lol

dunno man. but it just dont add up does it?

bilcos is the same sorta spec but a 1.4, and it made less power than most other 1.4s, tobys made 133bhp with a set of carbs bolted on ffs haha

People forget how much engines can vary with manufacturing tolerances.

For example,

Karting a few years ago, had 3 engines, brand new, all consecutive engine numbers, were all "blue printed" or whatever to the same spec, tolerances are tight and were all build to the same spec, a lot tighter tolerance than that of a Haynes manual, all on the same days with same carb/gearing/exhaust behaved totally differently

You get good engines and bad engines.

But to be honest iv been thinking of building a 1.6 AFH, just because of how easy it is for the gains, and I'm not even convinced on bothering with head work

Also, Dans was 156hp and steves, and 153 at Aldon, so IMO pretty accurate. Aldons rollers always seem accurate and consistent

The 1.4 AFH cams are suited quite nicely to the long stroke 1.6 as they're spicy enough already (it's never gonna be comfortable as a screamer), and there's plenty of torque. As are the relatively large inlet and outlet ports next to engines like the 1.8 20v n/a inlet and 1.6 AVY exhaust which look restricted by comparison.

Big holes and valves crammed together for the size of the head, the AFH is not a head that looks like it was ever gonna struggle with maximum available cylinder capacity, so it was no surprise it worked so well as it is.

Mikey you ran a 1.6 in an AFH block didn't you with 12.3:1 comp ratio? How would you say that was?

The cams and head work well i think .. as above 4.5k my car comes alive.

I can sit at 4k and boot and it will spin up in 2nd ..

Bit off topic but what does a standered valver redline at ? My power drops off at 6.5k on the rr printout but I'm sure he didnt take it above that anyway lol

Power drops off on the

1.4 about 6.5k

1.6 about 6k

Mikey I would be very suprised if briscoes only made between 140-145bhp. Mine made 137 with non of the stand out mods that briscoes has

Guy what are you chatting man? aha, Dans made ~154 average on different rollers? I said that above?

Yeah and Mikey said he thinks it would loose 10-15bhp going to injection

What about the added weight of the second fuse box ?

Oh, hi 8-)

Hahaha, power to weight, increase power or lose weight, add power and weight = NO GAIN BRO

Not bothered about loosing a few horses... Its still going to be fun lol

Pretty good!

But no better than when running Golf BCB 1.6 pistons giving me 11.5:1 compression (same as AVY pistons but without such deep inlet valve recesses). With the peace of mind from a safe ratio, that was the best engine.

Just weighing up my options :)

  • 1 year later...

did you manage to get it running on the efi renegade440???? is it a weapon ????? :-)
