1.4 AUD engine

Featured Replies

The 1.4 8v AUD lump in my Ibiza (also fitted to the 6n2) is a bit tappety (148 K) So I was going to pop the rocker cover off to see if it was a worn cam lobe or a sticking tappet block ?

Good job I had a read of elsawin before I started!! the rocker cover is more than that, it's also the top half of the camshaft bearing!! so before you take the "rocker cover" off you need to remove the cambelt!! What a stupid design :x

So the rocker cover is the camshaft bearing caps? Eh?!

Have you tried and oil and filter change? Lol, maybe easier ;)

Yes, and it looks like if the cam bearings are worn the only option is a new complete head and rocker cover :?

Oil n filter are the first things on my list, I was just going to pop the rocker cover off for a quick visual :x

5 - Cylinder head cover

- Sealing surfaces must not be worked

- With integrated camshaft bearings

- Removing and installing → Chapter

- Remove remnants of old sealant

- Coat with-AMV 154 103- before fitting

- When installing, insert vertically from above with dowel pins into holes of cylinder head

Lol that is seriously shit.

Lol that is seriously shit.

I thought VW made sensible things  but this engine :puke:

Haha wow that's a shit idea!

It'll have been a cost reduction exercise surely?

Or a service part increase lol

Its the same as the 6n2 16v engines 1.6 AVY and 1.4 AUA/AUB

The rocker cover acts as a camshaft housing, its a very gay design tbh makes simple jobs twice as long

Thats why its all about the 1.6 afh hybrid instead of the avy engine

It's not just the AUD but all these ANW,AUC,ALD,ANV,AUC as well :-(

most AUD engines I've come across have either failed or on their way out. Mostly due to stoopid design, so if its tappety i would recommend getting in there and sorting it before its too late.

Also try searching for a good aud engine, there aren't many

I have one in my 6n2, and when it was running right it was a great engine, but then it seemed to fail all at once, now I have had to rebuild the whole thing.

I used an AUD for one of my ally block 1.6 16v engines, i threw the head away. Shouldn't have done, there was nothing wrong with it, but i wasn't gonna use it. I noticed the cheap design with the cam cover incorporating the bearing caps, and i noticed the pressed steel exhaust manifold too..

Yep the mani's are pressed steel and the studs are made of what seemed like cheese .

Slightly off topic, but does a 16v head fit straight onto this block?

Yeah, but only once you've changed the pistons for 16v one's, and you need a 16v oil pump too.

Remember though, the 16v engine also has the cams in the cam cover - and two cambelts!

Fitting an AFH head is a proper pain in the arse, I didn't do a write up because people just won't want to do it..

There is also this which seems to indicate that the whole engine is considered a consumable item

Aluminium cylinder block

Caution

The crankshaft must not be removed. Just loosening the main bearing caps will cause deformation of the cylinder block bearing pedestals. This deformation will cause a reduction of the bearing clearance. Even if the bearing shells are not renewed bearing damage could occur due to a different bearing clearance.

If the bearing cap bolts are loosened, the cylinder block must be replaced complete with the crankshaft.

Measuring the main bearing clearance is not possible with normal workshop equipment.

That would explain a few things...it's not ment to be taken apart.

Funny, really. Seeing as the polo is the "lowest" in the range and is more then likely going to be worked on by the owner, as opposed to a Vw garage. Is this engine designed by Ferrari or something? As thats there mentality, don't fix just replace.

It's almost the same wording for the 1.25 & 1.4 Zetec lumps in the Fiesta and I'm told they were made in collaboration with Yamaha??

Don't fix it buy another one :x

  • 3 weeks later...

I've ordered new hydraulic tappets so ill see what happens whether I can quieten it down

What a stupid idea. Truly consumable engine haha.

Could be worse, that head could be bolted to an alloy block

It really is a stupid design, my mums chap had a 1.4 16v golf with the same sort of design head and what he thought were noisy tappets turned out to be warn cam bearings on the pulley end. That also seemed to be the route of the low oil pressure problems he was having with it too
