1.3 8v engine tuning

Featured Replies

I'm currently working on getting the most out of my engine and have decided I.want to go down the carbs route, so I'm planning on a set of twin 40 dcoe webers and a 268 cam but I want to know what else would help.me get the most from the engine and what people recommend, any help would be great and if u have a similar set up I would love to know

Cheers

272 cam

Would 40's not be a bit big for a 1.3 8v with that kind of cam?

Webbers over Bike Carbs.

What is the milage of the engine, engine code and most important - what is your budget?

Webers for the ultimate oldschool look/feeling.

Bikecarbs for a newer look, and if you can fabricate get someone to fabricate parts for you.

Both have the benefit of a propper setup from people that know their carburetors!

The limit is only your budget!

Progressive throttle driving ftw with fixed venturayyZzz

Decent exhaust system...preferably custom made to get best engine performance rather than off the shelf i.e optimum header length, collector size etc

Get cylinder head ported...prob best get done by performance engine shop so they can flow it it

Get lower end lightened balanced, this won't add more power as such just makes everything a bit more racey

The list goes on and on

I don't have a budget and engine is in 100k its a 1.3 8v from my 89 saloon the engine code is 2g its current on the standard carbs with mechanical fuel pump

Cam size what's the ideal one to go for

The head is currently off having head gasket done aswell as skimmed and pressure tested

264 everyday

268 fast road

272 road rally

That's my thoughts

Okay so no budget ... ???

Strip and clean bottom end. Rebuild with new rings, shells etc send to tuners to lighten and balance inc the flywheel and clutch. Or ( I think?? the 2g Is already 10.1 comp ratio if not then you could put in 3f pistons and crank to make 10.1 )

Or you could increase pistons to 77mm I think?? to get 1341cc best on G40 but a good improvement on n/a motor all the same.

Get head gas ported and polished. Put valves from passat or similar ( they have a larger head ) 3 angle valve seats cut

272 cam, Newman do them or 268 if you like, they also make solid lifters to replace hydro buckets....def worth it!

Commission a good high flow 4-2-1 exhaust system to be made. I recomend ojz engineering Retford

Get twin 40's set up professionally on rolling road by a carb wizard...you can easily loose 20-30 hp on badly set up carbs so make sure there spot on

Depends on personal prference too, i mean i had a 272 in a GT engine that was perfectly fine for road use. Did use abit more fuel though!

Gnna say 272 is hardly lairy!

that sounds very intresting, i believe the 2g is 9.5:1 at the moment what gain would i get from having the 3f pistons and crank? and what gain would i gain from having 77mm pistons instead of the standard 3f ones

would there be any advantage of removing the mechanical fuel pump and replacing with a facet one, would it be good to use a 3f cyclinder head and use the facet pump

Well the 3f head has double valve springs which is better.

A higher comp ratio is better for a n/a performance motor.

The blocks on the 1043 - 1272 Vw motor are essentially the same but the cranks change the cc size.

Fitting a 3f set of pistons will get you the higher comp ratio, the crank you could use yours or a 3f's really

I prefer not to for mech fuel pumps because it looks a bit messier in the bay and can't put out the higher pressures needed for raceier set ups like a facet one can

Over boring the engine to take 77mm I think?? Pistons will increase the capacity to 1341cc.

Not all 3F engines have double valve springs. These are only 'better' in a higher revving engine. It'll take a few modifications before valve springs become limiting, but worth looking out for

Just to add, the mechanical fuel pumps are good for about 100bhp, using DCOE's (Twin webers)

Well the fact I recommend a 272 can I'm going off the basis he will have a higher revving motor, why limit yourself to 100bhp when your building a screamer. If he can...ditch the mech pump. After all the facet pumps are only around £60. They'll see approx 200bhp so well over spec

Yes id reccomend getting an electronic fuel pump, as its handy to be able to cut the fuel whenever you want,

And that 100bhp wasn't a limit, its just what my scirocco produced, with DCOEs , it may be able to cope with much more :-)

What set up did u have in you are scirocco, just wondering what sort of figures I might get.

I've read that for every 100cc u should be able to get 10bhp so if I can get 130bhp that would be good but if not I would be happy with 100bhp

It had a an ABD bottom end, 2G head with GT cam, DCOE webers, cant remember the size, but they were big!. Wasnt a bad engine, but scirocco's, golfs/jettas etc are quite heavy so it was still very slow.

I dont think I've heard of an NA 1.3 8v making 100hp/1000cc up until "turbopolo" documented his engine in my build thread. Though that has a very good spec!

I 4t the 272cam had valve clearance issues?

I've seen a few 1272 8v make 96 bhp

Apparently 272 on a gt has clearance issues

Apparently 272 on a gt has clearance issues

It doesnt!
