  • James click on my profile and and look though my content. read through ym build thread I'm sure it will help a little. And also this picture shows what is what on the mk4 early fusebox. Thic

It's easier putting Afh pulley onto mk2 alternator. I'm not sure on the crank pulley change, I know they're weighted, the 6n2 gti is a lot heavier than Afh wether that matters I don't know...maybe mk2 would be lighter

just thought its tight in the bay with the wider pully? prob obvious when you have the engine

Arb mount needs tickling with a grinder to give the belt some clearance, no biggy tho

get the engine wiring diagram from for the 6N AFH from autodata or similair.

spend some time working through, one component at a time, match the wires to your exsisting loom.

that was the best way I could think of to get mine running. and then went about shortening and tidying up the loom.

Good luck

Thanks man.

I've got the ARC not AVY, why does everyone go on about AVY?

Edit:

Just googled it:

I had asked this question when I got my car and the difference I was told by VW is the the ARC engine is the unmodified engine without the CO2 restrictions, and that the AVY engine has a restriction therefore lowering CO2 emission and it comes in lower on tax too. Compare to the ARC engine which is on the high tax band.

8v engines have a different type of pulley fixing method than 16v engines. The 8v cambelt pulley is bolted on first with the centre bolt, then the aux pulley is bolted to that via four M8 bolts.

But the 16v pulleys mate to each other by shape, and are then secured together and onto the crank via the centre bolt - there are no other bolts.

So you can't bolt a narrow type 8v pulley to a 16v engine without engineering work being carried out (this would have to be done professionally, as vibration could occur if off centre).

Unless a narrow pulley with the 16v fitting exists.

I've had no problems running late alternators, just have to be savvy making brackets up. I currently have a 6n2 90A item on there, not that i need it with not so much as a stereo let alone modern electrical assistances everywhere, but still.

The short block 1.6 16v engines (Polo GTi, Golf4/Leon/etc 1.6 dohc, Lupo GTi, A2 1.6 Sport etc) were all fitted with a harmonic balancer. The 1.4 engines just had a normal pulley but the balancer has a thick ring of iron in it, moulded in with rubber, to act as a centrifugally operated centering force in the same way as the flywheel. Using the 6n/2 flywheel i've never needed to use it, but with one engine running a MK2/2F flywheel i did have terrible vibrations driving at very low revs without it.

I favour running the plain, light 1.4 16v pulley with the 6n/2 flywheel.

It is bloody tight though! With the ARB blocks pulling the TCA forward and therefore pulling the hubs in, i've only ever had a few mm's to play with between the crank aux pulley scraping the o/s chassis leg, and the n/s inner cv joint bottoming out (knurling the six sides against the drive flange, hammering the diff bearings).

Right I'm slighty confused, I've been told i will be able to Drill out the AFH/ARC roller...So it suits the belt?

yeh thats just the relay roller for cambelt, nothing to do with crank pulley?

So, The pulley situation? Any pictures?

What pulley do you want to run?

What pulley do you want to run?

Well, Whats recommend really, I'm doing AFH with ARC bottom end like, I'll look through the guide aswell.

AFH is lighter so run that one

AFH is lighter so run that one

What is a pully?

Are you fucking serious?

AFH is lighter so run that one

What is a pully?

have you just asked what a pulley is?

You need pipe down!!!

Dude private joke between me and Jake, No offence!

Basically this one time at band camp(Vw action) he pointed at a piston asked what it was he had no clue either, anyway lets not ruin a good thread

What is a pully?

Why are you dropping your bullshit joke in reply to what i'm saying though?

Tbf I thought he was being serious at first

Its not, I meant to qoute jakes!

Wouldnt supprise me ..lol

Ash, I think your trying to jump ahead of yourself .... Modding cars isnt all read it on the internet and everything goes to plan ..

Have to get stuck in and see whats going on and what works etc.... Over reading it can make it worst lol, When i did my conversion i over read and got confussed about the wiring systems etc, then just got stuck in and it was a piece of piss lol ..

Havnt you got the old coupe to play with .. ?

Could start by stripping the engine out of that and putting the new one in to get it to work .. Nothing to loose have you ?? your going to be doing the coversion anyway..

Rant over lol

Yeah man, Good job i've got my brother helping me out Jamie haha, Oh i'll just print out the 1.6 Bottom end guide and then get us going at, Yeah i have the other one on 4 axle stands, Just waiting for a Crane, Got both Engines like, Needing my mount, I'll see what happens, I'll take pics aswell, At the end of the day i've got CP!
