I am trying to find a diagram of the fuse layout for my 2000 1.4 Tdi diesel Polo, I have tried searching the internet with no luck. The Haynes manual that I have does not cover this particular engine.

My problem is that the car will not start and it appears that no fuel is getting through. There does not seem to be any power going to the in tank fuel pump so before I invest in a new pump I wanted to check the fuses and relays. I have spoken to my local VW dealer but they can not tell me which one it is either.

Any help or diagrams would be much appreciated.

First of all check your car actually has an intank fuel pump, my money would be on your car not having a lift pump, just a tandem pump on the side of the engine which is why you can't hear it prime if you lift the rear bench and then take the little black cover off it will reveal the fuel pick up 2 wires on the plug means you have a tandem pump 4 wires indicates an intank lift pump.

Have you tried plugging the car in to see if there are any fault codes.

Common problems causing early tdi's not to start is a failing 109 relay this can often be the case if the glow plug light does not come on with the ignition, there's loads of info on these on the net If you have a google.

Also how healthy is your battery, they do really need to be top notch for the engine to start even if its turning over ok, you could rule this put with a quick jump start.

As for fuse location is there not a card on the back of the cover you pull off on the dash to gain access

According to my VW manual, the 1.4 Tdi engine code AMF, there is NO in tank pump unit, the injection pump on the engine sucks the fuel through, so if you have no fuel at the injectors it's one of two possibilities, Fuel line has a split/hole in it so the pump cant suck the fuel through just sucking in air or the pump is goosed!!

Our car has a only 2 wires coming out of the fuel pump indicating the tandem pump. We called the AA and he checked the error codes and nothing showed up also the glow plug light does light up when the the ignition is switched on.

The battery also seems fine, with the fuse box, there is no fuse that's related to the fuel pump, we have looked online and everywhere points to the f40 fuse which isn't present in the car.

We have not looked up anything about 109 relay so i guess that's the next bet.

I strongly suggest you try a jump tho, I was in the same situation scratching head for hours, tried a jump cracked first time even tho it was turning over fine.

EDIT to say fuel pump is mechanical so won't have a fuse as such.

Just tried to jump start the car, that didnt work.

What makes you think it's fuel related, how many miles has it done, an have you ever put petrol in, the tandem pump going is not exactly common.

Also check your anti shudder valve isn't jammed shut, it's located in the egr valve, and closes when you turn the ignition off to prevent a run away but these can get clogged with carbon and stay shut.
