Cheap insurance for a first driver?

Featured Replies

Hi, I've just recently purchased a 1.4 8v polo (6n2) and was wandering if any users would be able to help me in where I could get cheap insurance for it?

it doesent exist.

Yeah, there is no such thing.

People usually get it cheapER by givin wrong details anyway effectively making it void

Look for places that do tracker policies - you'll be restricted in how & when you drive but it'll make it affordable til you've got some no claims.

And/or get loads of people with lots of NCB on as named drivers, that'll bring the quotes down.

Don't just rely on comparison sites, most of the quotes you get from them are from companies which are all part of the same group anyway, get out your good old yellow pages & get phoning insurance companies.

Tried putting your parents on your policy? Cuts mine massively. As already mentioned it isn't cheap for young drivers, there is expensive and less expensive, no cheap.

you don't save that much usually it's going to be £100-200 and chances are you will soon lose most of that in penalties for driving out side the specified hours.

tbh it's not worth it.

adding parents and people with loads of ncb and no points will help reduce the cost but as already mentioned there's no such thing as cheap insurance any more.

Yeah, as the others have said, there is no such thing, as cheap first time insurance.

However there are a few things that can help.

1. as mentioned above add parents (as long as they have clean licence)

2. Ask your parents who there with, some of companies do multivehicle insurance, and if you add you car on half way through the policy, it will run to their renewal. SOME INSURANCE COMPANIES GIVE 1 YEARS NCD FOR 6 MONTHS OR MORE. (good way to get 1st years ncd)

3. Look into young driver policies ( 9 month policies normally)

HOWEVER THROUGHLY CHECK THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS, MAKE SURE THE NCD CAN BE USED ELSEEWHERE OR THAT THE PRICE WARRENTS BEING TIED IN

4. Look at doing Pass plus, or local council scenes. (I got 20% off flux with my local sceme)

5. Do quotes online, (generally you get an extra discount for online quotes)

THERES A FEW THINGS, BUT THERE ARE PLENTY MORE. THEY ARE THE MAIN THINGS.

ALSO, ALWAYS MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE LEGAL SERVICES because it does cost much and they will defend you in the event of an accident. THE LAST THING YOU NEED AFTER GETTING YOU FIRST CAR, IS AN ACCIDENT THAT GOES 50/50 OR AGAINST YOU, BECAUSE YOU LOSE YOU NCD FOR THAT YEAR AND YOU HAVE TO DECLARE AN ACCIDENT....... SO GET LEGAL

one thing i forgot mention is that you will be better off geting quotes on different cars before buying one as there's still some cars out there that are quite reasonable to insure as there's no point buying the car you want and not be able to afford to insure it.

also a small car with a small engine doesn't necessarily mean cheap insurance sometimes its cheaper to get a bigger car.

be careful with 9 month for 1 year ncb policies as many insurers do not accept them so your ncb won't be worth the paper it's written on..

i phoned admiral the other day and asked about my 10 month policy and the said the NCD is transferrable

Transferred mine

Yeah its transferable, but that doesn't mean shit if the company you go with doesn't accept it as a years NCB, a lot don't. You could just not tell the company you are going with that its not a 12 month NCB and they might not ask, but if they find out you'd be well and truly fucked, especially if they find out after a bump

These accelerator policies are designed to keep you trapped to the same company, that's all well and good while they are competitive, but if they stop being so a few years down the line and you can't find a decent place to accept your NCB then your shafted and either have to stay with an uncompetitive company, or start over from scratch again
