Polo 6n power steering rack removal

Featured Replies

Hey guys, it's me being a pain again :p

Trying to remove my power steering rack for ellisimo on here, I've got the steering arms unbolted from the hub assembley, the 4 bolts that clamp it to the sub frame..... An now I'm stuck :/

What else is there to do? Do I have to drop the subframe to pull it off the steering column?

Anybody fancy running me through what's next please :)

Disconnect hoses from steering box and seal with plastic bag and adhesive tape.

‒ Seal power assisted steering box threaded holes with plastic sealing plugs.

1 - Banjo bolt (19 mm AF)

2 - Socket e.g. Hazet 4550

‒ Unclip hose retainer from hoses/lines.

‒ Remove power-assisted steering box bolts.

‒ → Detach pendulum (Dog bone) support -- at gearbox.

‒ Place gearbox jack V.A.G 1383 A under sub-frame.

‒ Remove bolts for sub-frame.

‒ Lower sub-frame using gearbox jack V.A.G 1383 A.

‒ Pull power-assisted steering box off steering column universal joint shaft and take out to side.

When removing the steering box ensure that the pinion splines do not stick or cant in the steering column universal joint shaft.

Hi Nige, can you give me details on how to replace a steering rack on a polo 9n 1.2, got a hole in the steering rack, had a snapped bolt in the subframes captive nut, where the gearbox mount goes in, and I was drilling it out and went through the rack 😕 any help would be grateful
