G40 engine tuning

Featured Replies

Looking to purchase a g40 some time in the very near future, intentions are to build a really quick/ clean stances show car, now just wondering what to engine wise, was thinking obv de wedging the throttle body, get the supercharger services and stage 4. Front mount, 4-2-1 and custom exhaust, there something about coraddo injectors? Which ones? Shrick cam, chip and remap :-) what gains are to be had from this? And can someone verify about injectors. All advice is appreciated. :)

Try clubg40 pal all the relevant info will be there in detail for you ;)

First steps, most common mods:

- smaller pulley (don't go smaller than 65mm if you want to keep it reliable) and refresh the belts while you're at it

- ported supercharger - most have already been done, if so get it serviced anyway unless you've got a recent receipt for the work

- performance chip - PPP sell them on here, multiple maps to suit different states of tune

- decent stainless exhaust

The above with a 65mm pulley should see you up to 140-145bhp on a healthy engine.

Check the condition of the following:

- charger-intercooler hose, they're prone to splitting with age.

- ignition system, particularly the coil pack, and that it's running good spark plugs and leads

- injectors and the in-line fuel pump - if either are problematic you could end up melting pistons

Then if you're after more power:

Dewedging the throttle body isn't an essential mod. I've heard it makes the throttle a little more on-off. I've still got wedges in mine.

Larger injectors - G60 'greens' - aren't a must-have unless you're running massive power. I've got them, I've heard they're overkill without lots of boost.

Front mount isn't a must-have either, IMHO, if you're running the standard charger it's not necessary. Turbochargers and especially Eaton chargers make more heat. A badly matched front mount could lose you power.

GT inlet manifold is good for upping the power. Quite cheap now, larger bore than the G40 one and easy to come by. Slight loss of low-end torque.

And save the money you could've spent on a front-mount on things like:

- an oil cooler with a thermostat - 100% worth having

- 256mm brakes

- coilovers

- saving up for a Quaife LSD or subframe conversion

All of the above will be more beneficial if you're sticking with a G40 charger.

Plenty of people on here who can give you a lot more detail and knowledge than I can though.

Sorry nothing beneficial to add really but Alexs post is bang on, nail and head!

ClubG40, a brew and a few hours on the search function can sort manya' issue :-)

Yeah clubg40 tommorow when a get up, thanks for the advice Alex, will defiantly bear all this in mind when a get the car, planning to get the car and make some shows in 2013 with it tbh, but advice I great thanks bud but yeah sticking to the g40 charger, considered the turbo but unsure as of how much work Is actually involved in doing so? Anyone help with info on the turbo g40? Av got coilovers and stuff there from my old gt coupe I had (sold regrettably) would they do? I'm Sure they are the same. Yeah I know about the fuel and ignition problem use to work in a garage that specialised inVAG, had one in that had all sorts of trouble in them areas, 3 garage couldn't get to the bottom of it. But great advice if anyone can add to this info then post away, need as much as I can giving myself a few hard months work todo the majority then maps and chipping to jabba. < anyone else apart from jabba recommended?

You can buy a manifold and downpipe for a turbo fairly easily, made by Rothe iirc. All you'd need then was a way to block off the boost return, a turbocharger and an intercooler to suit. Polo Performance Parts have off-the-shelf chips available for G40 turbos, though a custom map is advisable. You may need larger injectors too but again that's an area where others will be able to offer better advice.

Coilovers will go straight on.

Polo Performance Parts (PPP) have a section on here and they sell chips for G40s. Worth speaking to.

Yeah from that advice looking like we're going for a g40 turbo seen as it doesn't seem like there's too much work involved :D thanks for the help ad advice :) will look into the ppp stuff and also a remap cause there's a place 50 miles from me with a rolling road etc :-) and what is iirc a feel like a pleb but unsure lolz

If the charger's healthy I wouldn't rush out to get a turbo, spend the money elsewhere then upgrade at a later date.

There is a bit more work to a turbo than just the above. And costs will spiral. But if you were planning on a FMIC then you were always going to alter the boost piping which is part of the turbo installation (in terms of fabrication). The Rothe manifolds aren't that easy to get a hold of however (at least not in this country).

But clubg40 really is the place to go for all advice, you'll get much better, in depth information on there.

I don't own a g40 or pay much attention, but I agree with Alex's post

This. I'm surprised nobody's chimed in and filled in with more details but you should get a load more helpful information if you go on Club G40. I'm giving tip of the iceberg stuff.

Didn't think the Rothe manifolds were that hard to import though.

Biggest piece of advice I can give is get the car 100% mechanically sound first, running properly with no leaks or problems. It won't gain you any extra power but it'll at least give you a rock solid platform to start off with. It'll also stop you spending cash on extra power which is, in reality, just reclaiming power lost through poor maintenance.

I meant difficult to find in this country. Sure they are easy to get from the Father Land.

Alex is right about tip of teh iceberg stuff. I could tell you everything I know but there'd be no point as it's

a) So little

b) Be repeated by someone

Thanks for advice, am not gonna rush into turboing it but it will end up turbo'd, I always make sure my cars a sound in every way possible before a turn it into a toy, vw mechanic as it is so am really picky. But it's club g40 tommorow for a good few hours. Philj still makes manifolds and down pipes to order to my knowledge so will send him a message wen the time comes. And sort everything from there. Will right a post letting yous guys know what I find out. If someone can confirm about the Mani and down pipe from philj would be great. Thanks so much help though :) much appreaciated. Going back to 8v fosure had 4 engines in my valves this year and there unreliable compared to 8v :( shame really
