Hi guys, I've only had my polo for about 9 months now and I've been saving to do work on it ( other than essentials, gearbox's, exhausts ect ) My question is I want to fit alloy wheels. At the moment my polo is on original 13" steels, if I change the size should I tell my insurer? also if I stay at 13" but change the diameter, will that effect the insurance?

any change from the standard wheels will affect the insurance, try ringing up your insurer and asking them on how much it will cost you :)

I did they said any change in size will effect the insurance, I didn't ask if they meant width as well as diameter aha!

it all makes it go up unfortunatly mate :( its always worth telling them just incase you have a crash and they turn round and say you are insurance is void for your wheels .....

I think I will be changing insurers next year as now I want to "modify" my car LV are saying any modifications will void my insurance as they wont even offer to cover for alloys or coilovers. And 13" alloys aren't as common as 14" or 15" and the larger sizers have more styles. Any reasonable insurers that are quite lenient on modifications ?

I'm with elephant atm but i haven't done any mods yet so I'm yet to find out what they're like

Elephant are pretty good. They allow a wide range of mods but depending on how old you are it can cost quite a bit.

awesome hmm I'm 18 but got 1 years no claims so I'm hoping my costs wont go up too much :)

Churchill don't charge any extra for alloy wheels, you just need to inform them & they'll make a note on the policy. Presumably there are others. I'm with Admiral now & though they charge extra for non-standard alloys it wasn't too much more for me.

Have you thought about OEM alloys? Particularly ones that could have been an option when the car was new, can't reasonably class it as a modification really isnit.

with aviva in my first year i ran steels for so long thinking alloys would put it up, gave in and rang them and changing size and width of wheel and it being an alloy wheel it didnt =increase at all :)

Just done it, hopefully something will come up! Have considered removing the horrible paint job on the steels from the original owner and repainting them, but I have the feeling they wont look to good done by me aha!

yeah i painted my steels on my old 6n and never changed them cuz i liked them so much :)

I really want to its just I dont have axle stands or even a decent jack enough to get them off!

how old are you and have you got any no claims as I used sky insurance as advertised on here and they worked out cheaper with a modified policy than all orher insurers on a standard policy.

also halfords were selling cheap axle stands and trolley jack kits so might be worth cgecking there

I'm 18 in a couple of months, past my test in under 6 weeks so been on the road practically since my birthday aha!

Yeah just found a trolley jack for £20 odd quid so maybe worth investing!
