1.6 ARC/AFH hybrid engine with bike carbs to fit early polo

Featured Replies

hey guys.

I'm thinking of going down a different route with my mk2 now, and if i do this will have to be sold, so I'm just trying to see what interest id get and what sorta price i could sell it for.

Item:

1.6 16v AFC/ARC hybrid engine, with roller drilled out ect, fresh cambelt a couple months back, homemade long inlet manifold with vaccum take offs, CBR600 bike carbs, Mk3 flywheel, good condition clutch

Description/Condition:

engine is built up, but it needs new piston rings, as it is burning alot of oil.

the head has recently had a stripdown and been completely cleaned with the valves re-lapped in and new stem seals.

inlet manifold was made by me, i gas welded it on the inside of the runners, the tubing was shaped to the manifold plate, so actually follows the shape of the head.

the carbs are CBR600's, with throttle wheel in the centre, and 145 jets to suit the engine.

engine has a MK3 flywheel fitted, so you need a slim starter which i could provide, however i would suggest swapping to a MK4 flywheel and starter as the mk3 item isnt really up to the job unless you have a mega good battery.

What it will fit:

will fit a mk1/2/3 polo, or a mk1/2 golf with the correct mounts.

Location:

luton, junction 11 of the M1

Additional Information:

as said, to get it going, you will need to change the piston rings. once this is done though you should have a seriously quick polo, 140-150BHP should be acheivable easily.

Price:

i have no idea on price, so will say £350 for rules. open to offers

Postage & Packaging:

id rather it collected.

Seriously considering this. Ingition setup?

Would love this

Right, How many miles has the bottom end done in total?

And how many miles has the full lot done, any head noise?

Whats needed to get it running?

  • Author

i cant remember the mileage, think it was like 80,000

needs piston rings, head has been rebuilt. (in one of my threads) with new stem seals and valves relapped.

obviously i cannot guarantee its 100% the rings, but I've done everything else. so me and pretty much everyone else whos had their input on it are pretty sure.

comes with what is in the add. i can include a mk2 electronic ignition setup for extra if required.

Well if its the piston rings it will need new pistons and probably boring out as standards won't just sit in right, So will have to get Forged...What is needed for this to be running in a MK3, Minous the engine problem.

  • Author

it wont need new pistons. it will need new rings, and will need to be honed with a honing tool

all the stuff u need is the same as the AFH conversion FAQ,

i even have the alt pulley ect i could probs chuck in

Right, So if i replace the rings...

Does it smoke at all? Cause i remember seeing it did at one point bud.

  • Author

yeah thats why the rings need doing. alot of oil in cyl 1

The issue is burning oil, suspect rings.

It won't need boring out and forged pistons at all.

For a start standard replacement rings, or oversized rings, or even oversized non forged pistons would be options.

Cyl #1 is the issue, could be a cracked ring.

I'll have to see what cash is like and see if i can get it sorted out.

I can always pick it up for you ash not too far.

Yeah man, Cheers, I'll see what i'll do tho.

now think it may be the valve guides that are shagged. taking to work this week to do a leakage test. will report back after.

Make sure you report back dude

Engine and manifold are last on my list

  • Author

cool dude

Look forward to the up date could be very intrested ..

I thought you fitted new valve stem oil seals though Eric

So it wouldn't be the valve guides leaking oil

  • Author

it has new stem seals yes. but the guides being worn would still do the same

the oil has to get through the seals to get down the valve guides though is what I'm saying Eric

  • Author

if the guides are that bad the seals wont do jack lol
