Not declaring mods

Featured Replies

Right I've got a mate, he isn't declaring any of his mods, in my eyes this is stupid, anyway he doesn't believe me that they check build threads ect... So can someone just clarify with me that not declaring mods is silly and that they DO check build threads and forums ect.Sorry this is random but he won't believe me till someone else says so.

Yep.

Its been covered on here about people being done for it. Also stories of people having insurance cancelled by insurance companies watching at track days/drag strips etc.

also going online to get test quotes for mods you dont have can get you in trouble.

We have 3 or 4 insurance companies on here as sponsors, so they probably do look around every once in a while.

The build thread section is open to view by anyone.

Cheers Ceri I know it's been covered but made this thread to show him and others why our insurance is so high!

Advise him to try some specialaist (modification friendly) insurers to get a comparison against an insurance policy actually worth the paper it is written on.

The problem there is that whoever gives him a quote will effectively show his current insurer he's looking for insurance on a modified car. He can then get heavily penalized, and could become uninsurable due to his current position.

With no respect for the privacy of information we share with insurers anymore, none of you insurers can be trusted any more than we can.

That's fucking ridiculous. I can't see how getting a quote for modifications can have any bearing on your existing policy. I called my insurance company before I did any modifications to find out what the insurance cost would be.

Apparently if i cancel my insurance now, I will NOT get a refund, So I'm £300 deposit down!!

In which case my insurers must think I'm mad.

Why would it? That doesn't make any sense and I've done it many many times in the last couple of years. Elephant have "quote only" when declaring (or not declaring) modifications on their website when you contact them.

if you get found out in a random stop by the police your insurer will cancel your policy and they will take your car, not to mention IN10 on your license and 6 points and a £200, if it goes to court you can face a fine of up to £5000

if you drive for a living you may lose your job and for the next 5 years any future employers will avoid you due to higher premiums.

You're incorrectly tarring all insurers with the same brush but you are of course entitled to that opinion. I can 100% assure you though that we would not share information with his insurer.

Perhaps advise him to have all of his standard parts on stand by and a team of friends to come and swap everything back to standard if /when he has an accident? Wish him luck with that when the car is stuck half way up a tree :-)

Unfortunately two well known and common insurers use information you put on their websites and comparison sites as gospel and automatically add them to your policy and charge you without checking. The whole practice is despicable.

Holy crap, that's awful. Name & shame FTW ;)

That's not my place but it's just a shame the knock-on effect damages other insurers like ourselves.

Hi,

criteria varies on what is presented to us but our very minimum criteria via our car club scheme is as follows:

Full 2 years experience, also:

age 19 or over for TPFT cover

age 21 or over for fully comprehensive cover

^ both subject to at least 1 year claim free driving experience

Thank you

just another quicky, my renewal is up in a week or so, but i have a bit of a dilemma,

i will be renewing with a 1.3 golf, yet it is only for a month or two untill my polo is rebuilt and back on the road. the problem is my polo is going to be turbo'd ect so obviously the premium will go up, but i wont know by how much as obviously that will be in the future, and if i ring up and the premium is stupid, I'm stuffed.

what would you suggest i do?

thanks

ah okay mate no worries thanks for getting back so quick! I'm only 18 :L

I'd add to this that if you have an accident then these days everyone will be taking pictures with their mobiles, the loss assessor will take some digital pictures and everyone will be emailing them about. If your insurer sees anything not in line with what you have told them, they will void the insurance as a minimum. Disproving their decision and getting any money back I suspect will involve a civil court case and a good lawyer.

Hi,

it should be easy enough, this is a specific demand and need you have , you need to get quotes on the golf and then quotes on how much it will be the change over to the polo at a later date.

Thanks

awesome thankyou. i will have to give you guys a call.

or insure both eric like i do with sky, brilliant service chaps btw - allows me to travel to the shows in my polo and drive to work in my skoda so i dont ruin it.

obviously the £££ makes a difference in this choice

i wish i could mate but i simply dont earn enough to insure 2 cars :( lol

Non of my mates declare any mods at all! Most of them are up shit creek if they crash. It pisses me off as my car is now completely standard because I'm not able to declare anything! Realistically when might I be able to start modding my car and declaring it, obviously its down to that specific insurance company but I'm only 17 and I'm wondering if you guys think there's much chance of any insurance company letting me modify my car after my first years no claims (if I get it) and when I'm 18.sorry for the essay! :paranoid:

everything dave has said about friends not declaring! pisses me off! and yes x2 anyone insure a lowered car at 18 legit?

Pisses me off too. But it's like everything in life really, some people are genuine and honest, some think the world owes them something

A specialist insurer is the best thing I ever did, it's a shame you're a bit age limited with them really.

Declaring my mods or any changes is so easy, so friendly, dealing with main stream insurers always seems a mission, every time I phone mine I have a good laugh with them, very helpful, and when you explain a mod they comment and say related things about it, not "I'm going to see my supervisor because I don't know what a hubcentric wheel spacer is"
