I've seen a few old vw's recently driving around with their indicators constantly on, I'm not sure if this is a stupid question or not but i was just curios on how to do it on a mk2?

I can confirm this is a stupid question. Astoundingly so. Why would you want your indicators constantly on? The ones you've seen are probably faulty.

They run the as sidelights or along side the side lights, go scrappy or eBay and get 2 spare sidelight bulb connectors (preferably with wires in) extend te wires long enough to go from your sidelight to indicator.

Join the ends with your existing sidelight feed, your choice on how (splice, solder etc)

Drill a hole in your indicator big enough for the new sidelight connector to go in (but tight enough to hold it in) and fit orange/plain bulbs depending to the colour of your lense.

You can then remove your original sidelight bulbs so just the indies are on, your choice. Think police would pull you if you did so I would advise to keep them in.

Edit: using sidelight bulbs means the actual indicator itself will always overpower the colour of the sidelights

Just plug your sidelights into the indicator housings via a second hole, and put some foil tape over the original hole in the headlamp.

I run amber sidelight bulbs as they make people take notice, a copper asked me "what's with the candles for headlights?" I told him amber sidelights were legal, and he said "yeah fine, but it's getting a bit dark so can we see some dipped lights work?"

I'm pretty sure they're legal (yellow certainly are), no copper has argued otherwise yet. Might be something in the MoT about everything needing to be the same colour though.

Not a silly question at all its a mod alot of people are doing at the minute, cheap and easy to do. I did think about it but I'm not that fussed, plenty of how to's all over the internet too. A quick google search will sort you out.

if you've got LED side repeaters, you can also make them light up with a diode, a resistor and some wire

wire from sidelight -----Diode ----- Resistor ------Side Repeater

existing wire from indicator ------------------|^

with sidelights on, it goes through the diode (to prevent current flowing backwards) to a resistor to side repeater, to glow dimmer

with indicator on, it shines at full brightness as it should

(that's only theory, it should work, but I haven't personally tested it to verify) this should also work with normal filament side repeaters, but you'll probably need a bigger resistor.

Also a lot of American cars have this, as they come on with the ignition, then they get brighter with the indicators. But worth mentioning, a lot of yank cars use the brake lights as indicators, so this may be all wrong.

Ah yes, just realised you'd need a diode on both positive connections...

I know the OP was asking about fronts, but thought if give an idea if they wanted to do sides as well

Replace the bulb holder in the indicator with this http://www.autoelectricsupplies.co.uk/product/452 item 132011 then you can fit a standard 5/21W stop/tail light bulb, this will give you a 5W sidelight and a standard 21W indicator

easyer way to do it go on ebay look for double element bulb holders swap them for you single elment idies wire them up to side lights and indies then you have indies in the side light and when you put indecator on it will cancel the side light out making it road legal as the yanks have them like that takes bout 20mins to do

Alot of the cars youve seen will fail the MOT, as they dont have normal sidelights. What you should do is what i did. Fit LED sidelight bulbs and wire an extra bulb holder with side repeater bulbs into the sidelight loom and run it to your indicators. My old coupe:

I think you can buy housings that will also take a side light bulb. For the mk2 this is surely the easiest way. The stop tail conversion is all well and good, but you can't have separate colours unless there are some fancy LED stop and tail bulbs out there that are different colours?

I presume when they flash with the side light on the effect would be like a stop and tail bulb on the back, ie it would get brighter then dimmer, so still flash, or like switching on main beams from dipped. I don't know what Mr MOT man would say about it but a few years ago mine failed for having LED side lights, same colour as what all cars with DRLs have now. He wouldn't have it though, so I told him to change them knowing full well they are an absolute bastard to change on the car I had at the time, which was why I got them in the first place.
