What Polo to get ?

Featured Replies

Hi there my name is Oliver , i am 14 (turning 15 this august) I know most of you are thinking "why is there a 14 year old on a polo forum??" anyway i have an extreme passion for cars and i was thinking of buying myself a Polo 6n or 6n2 and work on it until i am 17 which then i could drive it. I know how to install certain parts but very limited due to lack of experience; In which this polo could help me with. I am going for a really nice euro look with the stretched tyres, coil overs etc.. and i was hoping if you could help me rule out between the 6n and 6n2. thanks

From those 2 id buy a 6n2, the 6n will have rotted away long before you pass your test

But if it were me id be looking at a mk3, theyr so easy to work on if your just getting used to working on cars

There are some 6n's that aren't rotted tend to be on a V reg as thats when they started galvanising them i beleive i had a v reg 6n and my mate is still driving it around now rust free. But the 6n2 is abit more refined more modern and you can pick a decent one up for £1200ish if you keep looking.

All down to your preference I've had 3 6n's never had a 6n2 but thats only because i wanted the 100bhp 16v and the 6n2's there hard to find...

But as Tramp says go for a mk3, much more simple to work on (except coilies are exspensive) really nippy if you get a 1.3. I've had 2 a 1.3spi and a GT both really good cars.

Yeah at first i was thinking of getting a mk3 as older cars have less stuff on them and just as you said easier to work with but i wouldn't have access to a garage so it would be sitting on a driveway; it would be then be more prone to rust and i just really wasnt sure

I'd recommend a 6n2. MK3s are easier to work on, but you're likely to have more bodywork (rust) issues on them, especially if it's sitting outside. Also going from the car you learn in back to a mk3 will seem like a huge step backwards. I drive a 9n currently and have a mk2 project (v similar to mk3) and although I love the mk2, whenever it's driven it's tiring, has little knocks and noises that the 9n doesn't have. But which do you prefer?

If it was me in your position, I'd get a mk2 or mk3, and then you have lots of time to make it special and it will be a a bit rare compared to a 6n2 which will no doubt drop in value and appeal to the more Barry type and be a bit common.

Iv had 2 mk3s 2 6ns and now I have a 6n2.

The best out of the lot was the mk3 gt.

But it's your choice and you who will be driving it so its personal preference really.

Out of 6N or 6N2 i would pick the 6N2 as its the more modern looking.

I'll be honest if I had 3 years to wait before I could drive it I'd probably try to save instead, cause isnt the car gonna have to be insured if it's on your drive incase anything happens to it?

but out of the two cars I'd choose 6n2 since most 6n owners put stuff from 6n2s on them

Laid up insurance doesn't cost alot, £10 a month for my Mk2 Golf 16v, just get a parent to sort it.

Can the car not be SORN and stil covered under house insurance? Just need to add to the policy?

Personally I prefer the 6n2 because i think it looks just a little bit better than the 6n but i reckon i could do alot more to the 6n however the 6n2 would probably be more worth while

Cars date very quickly and the same with parts. The 6n is over halfway through being rinsed now - just look at the census poll, three years ago it was mainly 6n's on here.

They may be popular in breakers yards but in three years time they'll be relatively scarce. So you need to consider not what it is today, but what it will be in three years.

When I was 15 i had a 4-dr Chevette, I had big dreams of twin countersunk headlamps in the droop snoot over a slatted lower grille, chrome flames, Ferrari tail lamps, slotmags.. but then at 16 with a full time job and mates with cars, my attitude changed completely and I bought a mint condition 9yo car which I barely touched for having new interests instead.

If you're gonna keep a car static outside for a couple of years know this - you must park it on the south side of the building if it's tucked up next to the building. Otherwise it's always damp and will rot inside and out.

Yeah I also had that in mind , my driveway has a little bit of a shelter where the front door is but yeah I've noticed the amount of 6n's and 6n2's I've seen around

If i was you out of a 6n and 6n2, I would get the 6n2.

But i think you should look into the mk3/mk2 polos as they are getting collectible and are a future Classic.

Have a look at the builds on here and think about what you want from a car.

Bare in mind insurance costs on a modified car too. Already premiums for someone your age are huge without modifications. If trends continue as they are, premiums will only keep on going up.

i would suggest a mk2 or 3 as there so easy to modify whereas 6n's and the linke have loads of ecu and are more difficult to do what you like :)

Yeah i thought about that too, i searched up a quote for my name as second driver on a 1.0 polo 6n2 and the insurance totalled to £1350 which i dont think is too bad compared to others that i had checked but i live in croydon area which is pretty rough but I've seen a few bentleys and rolls royces around that haven't been broken into yet so thats cool

I never realised that VW never started galvanising until V regs i thought most cars were galvanised as common practice way back in the mid 80s but i must admit i was surprised when I've been to the local breakers how many 6ns are starting to apppear on the sites thats hence why I've started to stock pile bits and peices for mine just in case :-( .

Agree as a project a Mk 3 might be better being simpler to work on .

Yeah i was thinking about a mk3 but there just too expensive for what they are , and if i leave a polo 6n2 in a drive way for 2 years would it seize up?

Its not good to leave cars sitting for a long time. If i was you i would get one of your parents to give it a run round the block every now and then. Also when you start driving it will need a good check over on a ramp. I have the same problem as i have a 1961 beetle which i cannot afford the insurance it is garaged but in a few years time when i have the money it is going to need a good check over and free the brakes off, ect.

15 when i got my polo now coming up to 17 and not drove it properly :( i would think for your age a 6n2. My car was dog cheap so have a look :p

Oh also no need for insurance as mine is kept in garage over night and is on house insurance hahahaha ;D mine not been on roads for 13 months

keep your eyes open over a few months for a 1.0 L polo for insurance resons the older the better and fix it up ready for the road mot

Yeah i think i might just settle with a Polo 6N2 , will be fitting coil overs , gold dare rs 16" wrapped in stretched tyres , a decent induction kit , angel eyes , a good sound system with a double din and i wasnt sure whether to get a debadged grill as the 6n2 hood will have an empty part on the front of the hood
