Just wondered when a car becomes tax exempt, a lot of people are saying mine is but I have no idea :s should know this really.

I'm fairly sure it's any car registered prior to 1972 when it was introduced it was for any car 25 years or older but it was'nt on a rolling basis, ie today a 1988 car is'nt tax exempt

Yeah I read that it was 25years old but then thought of the amount of cars they would lose money on, good to know though :) cheers guys.

When the tax concession for 'Historic Vehicles' was introduced, a vehicle automatically became tax exempt the next time it was due for tax after the 25th anniversary of it's first registration. As I recall, there were special arrangements for vehicles over 25 years old that were subsequently imported. As soon as the Blair government got in in 1997, they sneaked 2 provisions into the Finance Act:-

1. They got rid of the 25 year rule, so that any vehicle registered after 1st April 1972 could not become tax exempt

2. They got rid of the 'Farmer's Light Goods' taxation class which was about half the rate of the standard road fund tax.

My Landrover had been 'Farmer Light Goods' ever since it was registered on 7th June 1974, so I got a double whammy. My road fund tax doubled and my Landy was just over 14 months too young to become 'historic'.

Yeah it was rolling 25yrs, so every car had paid it's tax at 25yrs and no longer had to pay once it got to that age.

Until Labour were tragically voted into government in 1997, and before he even sold off half our gold reserves at rock bottom price, the first thing Gordon Brown did was abolish classic car tax. So at that point a 25yo car was a 1972 model - these then were the last cars to qualify.

The current government can't reinstate the old system because it would mean many thousands of vehicles having their tax abolished overnight, which just isn't affordable. So those of us with pre-1988 Polos are literally paying for that corrupt gold deal, and are sentenced to do so for the foreseeable.
