HIDs in a Mk2

Featured Replies

I'm worse at electrics than I am at figuring out fuelling on bike carbs, so I have no idea how I would go about this. One of the porblems going from new back to old is that you see how crappy old cars are (for comfort and safety at least!). I bought som Osram Nighbreakers for the MK2, but they're still not a patch on the 9n ones I'm now used to, so how hard is it to fit HIDs to an early Polo? I'm guessing difficult as Kiz was recently asking for some headlights so he could fiddle about making HIDs for these (At least that's the idea i got from the wording of the ad). Could I get a set of say 6n2 ones and they'd work? I know wiring needs to be sorted along the way somewhere. Do they mount in the bulb holders the same way as standard bulbs? What the legality of them now (getting mixed messages)

not sure on hid , but i can tell you relaying the nightbreakers will make them very good , ours is plenty safe at night and no worrys about illegal etc

While the HID FAQ doesnt cover fitting to particular models it covers most of the info you've asked.

You will need a H4 Bi-Xenon Kit so you keep hi/lo beam.

HID's will work fine with stock mk2 wire as they draw less power than conventional bulbs.

BUT I have not tested what the beam pattern is like on the mk2 lights. so couldnt be too sure on how much glare and scatter they cause.

Cheers Ceri, I hadn't read the FAQ. I'll be sure to have a read around there and come back with questions. I'm wondering about fitment as much as anything.

Steveo - How do I go about relaying the standard bulbs? I'm an electrical dunce!

If the MK2 uses H4 hi/lo as said, you basically buy the HID kit, comes with 2 ballasts, two bulbs and a bit of loom.

It's really pretty self explanatory, find a home for the ballasts that still allow the loom to get to the headlights.

I've not used Hi/lo before, but I'll assume that there will be three wires:

Positive

Negative

Hi feed

Into the ballast - brown will be negative, then the other two someone else can answer.

Repeat on both sides. Bulbs in, and plug the bulbs into the ballast. Honestly not hard at all.

It appears it isn't. I just assumed it was harder than this because so few people seem to run HIDs in mk2s. Additionally, Kiz's post threw me too. Seems a no brainer for the price too. Are there any kits to recomend/avoid?

had hids on my mk2 briefly and they were ok.

also had them in my golf.

beam pattern was alright, i just aim them down a bit to avoid blinding people.

I've took them out tho as its not worth the hassle from police ect.

I've heard good things about the uprated headlight looms you get off ebay

What sort of hassle did you get Eric? What was up with the beam pattern?

It's a doddle to do .

Retro-fitted them on my Mark3 and in all honesty, it was working in 30minutes.

The kits are designed to be plug and play. Its just a case of how tidy you want to be with wiring, etc. I tried to utilise as many factory mounting point as possible, so have mounted a ballast using the studs for the airbox on the O/S inner wing, and used one of the mounting points for the washer bottle on the N/S wing. It means no unsightly holes and it can be reversed back to standard should I want.

As mentioned you'll want a H4 hi/lo kit for the main lamps. Iirc its H1 for the spotlamps on Mark2 grilles if you're so inclined to wire those up.

With the kits available, you do get what you pay for. I paid circa £70 for mine 2 years ago. Its lasted fine with no problems and looked and felt like a decent bit of kit. Theres cheaper available for £30 but they really do feel horrible and plasticky.

The beam pattern is a slight concern though, as older cars tend to have the beam pattern stamped into the headlamp lense.

Modern stuff doesnt have this, simply a clear lense. The problem you get is the printed beam pattern scatters light in all directions, rather than the clear lenses which when used with a projector in the lamp, focuses the light.

none but its not worth the risk, easily spotted by the plod, and no self levellers and headlight washers ect

nothing was uo with it, i just pointed it a bit further to the floor to avoid annoying people

Try and get the Reflector types if you can. Ran these for over a year, only flashed a few times and never bothered by the Police. Suppose they were only 5k anyway, so hardly blue.

Just put xenons into mine and they're 6k, although a little dim.

H4's should come with a secondary loom, that plugs into the old bulb socket and connects straight to the battery, this loom controls on/off and hi/lo. so all your stock wiring is doing is controlling that (less than 1 amp of draw).

Tbh theres no way of messing up the new type kits as they are litrally plug & play.

As eric said you might need to aim them down very slightly (the HID burner doesnt quite sit in the same place).

I think Kiz has the idea of fitting a HID projector behind the mk2 lens, something i have considred for the mk2F as well but the Mk2F lens has perfect pattern as it is i never followed it up, but the grill lamps are another matter......

H4's dont come in an R format. only the single position ones.

Higher the K number dimmer and bluer the light but 6k should still be fairly bright (4300K being the brightest of the white lights)

I'm still debating fitting hid's to my mk2f, one thing I'm concerned about is my headlights are tinted and i haven't come across anyone with tinted hid lights before

I tried fly eyes on mine and it didnt work well. caused too much glare, possibly down to the white on the inside of the fly eyes reflecting.

Lamin-x type stuff should be ok ddo.

I have hids fitted to my coupe (previous owner)

If someone wants to remove them at the rr day (if I sort my wheel bearing ill be there ) they can have them....

That was the picture I was gonna post if I could find it.

Didn't know you couldn't get R tyres though, that's a bummer.

They're brand new bulbs, so I doubt it's them. But I'm pretty sure the ballasts are gone! They take over 2 minutes of turning on and off to get them to fire. Once they're on they're fine, it's like you need to get heat in them first.

Ballasts are the original OEM ones, so over 12 years old now. Dull and too long to fire. It's gonna be them.

if you wanted to go with the relayed standard lamps , theres always some pre made kits on ebay if you cant make your own

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/H4-Halogen-Head-...=item25679c0a92

if you do get one make sure its covered up enough to keep the rain out

hard to jusify the relay kits when hid are so cheap ..id expect that the patterned mk2 glass will make for lots of glare with hid

would it make mutch diffence if useing h4 12v/130/90 what bulbs ?

would i need 40 amp relays higher what fuses ?

or would i be better of useing 4 relays instead of 2 one for each bulb filment ?

Not road legal but I doubt anyone would check.

Plus a possibility of melting something if there is a weak/damaged wire somewhere.

Unless you are making a upgrade loom at least then everything will be new.

1 relay per filement would be a nice way to do it , that way if one fails you dont lose both lights

you can work out what fuses you want watts divided by volts , round it up to the nearest fuse

I've had 100 watters before , they're pretty rude and sign posts will dazzle you , no harm in making the loom capable of using those bulbs and give it a try ..personaly id say the nightbreakers with a loom are enough and no heat problems etc
