I really don't understand how the two are related. Photo of a mashed car in which someone has just died, or a tank at some sort of motor show which may have killed someone once upon a time.

None of which were fatal, I'd imagine. I've got a friend who works in the police, he's got thick skinned to it but if you see a few fatal accidents you'll think differently. It stays with you.

tbh, maybe if people saw the destruction that can happen in a car accident, it might motivate them to try and drive better. Seing an image of a mashed up polo, where someone has more than likely been seriously injured or worse, might just make that hot headed new driver, showing off to their friends think twice before trying that overtake, or the older driver who thinks they are skilled enough to drive at 70 mph when road conditions are far from suitable for such speeds. (not tht I'm suggesting that any of the drivers that were at the wheel of those polos were at fault, they may or may not have been)

I personally don't think the pics were 'poor taste', shocking yes, but I think they would have been bad taste had there been blood and guts visible, which unless I need a trip to spec-savers, there was not.

If they want to see it, they can Google it. Do we need it on here? No.

TBH if it was a friend or relative of mine who'd died in an accident and the images of the mashed car were all over the net for people to gawp at I'd be really upset by it. Just because you can't see blood doesn't stop it being bad taste.

Case in point, 9/11. Picking it because it's an iconic image, the towers being hit by planes and collapsing. In fact we're so desensitised to it that we don't think anything of it when Flo Rida uses the footage in a fucking music video. I know it's different to car accident images, but I think people forget what they're actually looking at.

Agreed to be honest, makes you think about how fragile our cars are, and how much more fragile the squidgy things they carry about are.

I've been just passing when accidents have happened and done what I can for the people involved, and it can mess you up. The advice here is don't click it if you don't like what you're going to see, and I'll be editting the title to say that now.

Crash anything fast enough and you will end up in a bad way. You might have a 5 star ncap polo, but you crash that badboy into a land rover or a lorry, I'm fairly certain you will be a bit squashed.

Nah, i see what you're saying, but i've seen some dark stuff and i can make something positive from it. That obviously depends on the individual, but you take from something what you will - instead of protecting people from such education i agree with B-shaw that it should be on view for us to learn from.

That head-on job is a good example. Obviously they were killed. I actually think the car did well, i know if that was a Rover Metro/100 you'd have to tell what it was by the tail lights..

Anyway, much as i like the dark stuff i do think this topic is a bit.. strong. And i like that. And i'm happy to contribute; i wasn't wearing a seatbelt when i lost it half asleep after a 12hr nightshift one morning on black ice. I tried to feed it off the grass verge, but i couldn't really be arsed TBH, i just didn't bank on there being a tree stump there..

Having been slung into the dash/passenger side, i was thrown into the back seats, before being thrown back into the front. My face wiped out the rear view mirror and passenger b-pillar trim, had the heater controls sticking out of my knee, found myself laying in a shattered sunroof. And i was showered by hammers etc as my open-boxed tools pebble-dashed the interior. Moral to the story - don't drive so tired, wear a seatbelt, and keep tools enclosed.

maybe some people find the topic quite strong..it just makes you think that old cars not just polos arent meant to excess speeds that they do with AFH's and other conversions. So just take the time to look and think about how easy it is to fuck everything up..i've been there paid the price, lucky to come out with a cut in my head but was okat..taught me never to corner quick in the wet in a punto otherwise you will end upside down kids!

I was actually siding with you for awhile Alex, although this comment made me realise something about myself... if i didn't want to see the photo's then i wouldn't have clicked a topic which had the clear title of "wreaked polo's".

This morning there were fresh photos of a burning road and VW golf which had been hit by a crashed helicopter. Two people died only hours earlier... I might not have wanted to see such sights but, after all, i turned the news on, what else did i expect to see?

I have witnessed a car crash right in front of me which, i believe, had a fatality too... i was shocked. I now drive slower in wet conditions. Seeing these things are educational to the ones it doesn't bother to look at them, and can be easily avoided by the people who they do bother.

Conclusion is, everyone's right here. It all depends on the individual looking out for themselves.

You miss the point. The front end of the Volvo has massively deformed - but that's what it's designed to do to protect the passenger compartment. Gone are the days when the crash boys just made stuff fecking strong and tried not to let it deform. Controlled energy absorbtion is the aim of the game, not keeping bent panels to a minimum.

Sadly that also means more minor bumps these days can cause significant damage.

This is true, I guess I have seen too many pictures of older Volvos that obliterated stuff and probably drove away, old American cars are pretty good at that too.

Interesting topic this, by far the most interesting I've read this year. Time for my contribution i think:

Firstly a mates pride and joy, i'm sure he won't mind me posting it here, heading to work one normal Friday morning a foreign lorry that was lost pulled out in front of him, he braked and swerved but naturally there wasn't much he could do, he was doing around 40-50mph upon impact. He was fine, apart from being shaken up and having a bit of whiplash i think.

Looked like this to start with, although it was lower by the time the accident happened

Ended up like this:

It really was crumpled, the roof was wrinkly, the drivers door bowed out, a finger width gap at the top of the passenger door, engine mount and driveshaft broken etc. More importantly though the pedals had risen up a good few inches which was quite shocking!

This is one of many i've spotted at breakers, it went into the crusher the day after i took this, fortunately some parts had been saved:

And it doesn't really count as wrecked, but on paper work a Cat D is i guess, the damage was a fist sized dent on the front drivers wing and the front bumper was crooked. It was in the salvage section for a while but £500 for an old polo with no tax and mot looking like this...

I know its all to do with labour and parts costs against book value, but still a bloody shame in my mind, it was a Genesis with a NZ lump iirc.

I can remove that last one though if its not crumpled enough for this thread.

Love this thread, I crashed recently as I wasn't giving the road my full attention. I think this shit makes you realise that crashing in a tin can mk1,2,3 can have servere conciquences. Even if it makes people think twice about hitting that hairpin at 60 then its worth a pop.
