i was driving home last night and the ice got the better of me taking me sideways in to a curb!

now my rear wheel is poking out slightly as apposed to the otherside and my sterring is goosed hoping its just my tracking thats gone.

so my question is will any mk3 coupe rear axle be ok to put on my gt or is it possible to ust replace stub axle?

can replace a stub axle yeah. but it maybe that the axle itself is bent

you can use a coupe one but the gts and g40s have an inbuilt anti roll bar.

i think its bent where to stub axle bolts on and bottom of coilover :/ any ideas where i can get one, highly doubt there will be any gt's in scrappies around kent

Is that the only way to tell if a rear axle is bent? I did the same thing last night but it doesn't look bent, as in the wheel doesn't look it.

anyone know how to tell if i've bent something on the front end as my steering wheel is well out now and both wheels are slightly different directions :'(

Only examine, measure, inspect and wobble as much of the front end as you can.

The bottom arms are pretty good at bending to take the force away from the chassis, but do look utterly everywhere.

The front chassis on these are like cheese, check that nothing structural is bent/twisted before buying any new parts

something must be bent i just cant see what :/ sounds expensive!

any ideas what may have took a beating first? all looks pretty straight.

would it of pushed the antiroll bar along where it bolts up causing my wheels to un-allign?

Have a read of this thread, it did have some pics in it that would of given you a better idea of what to look for but it looks like they might been deleted

I've seen some pretty badly bent axles replaced and the car been fine after so I wouldn't worry as much about the rear, its the front that is the weak end on these cars

Anything can bend if you whack it hard enough mate, although if it gets hit hard enough on one of these they tend to take out the chassis leg. Iirc the one in the link above twisted the tca mount on the chassis leg

its not that bad on front end the arse end took most of it its just thrown my steering wheel 90 degrees left!

I just sat in my front room watching idiots struggling to drive up my street and crashing into kerbs, while my car stayed parked safely in the drive. I had to go out today, so i just walked. its worth being cold and your journey taking alot longer, over a trashed car.

Well you cant enjoy it now can you. Theres 365 other days in a year and you chose to drive on the worst, and paid the price. Anyway, if it was really your pride and joy and worth that much to you (as my car is to me) you wouldnt have risked damaging it.

Jeez, why so serious? Its not even your problem. And yes, it actually will help some people, maybe some people will read what i said, take it in and not go out in their cars asking for a crash. Just felt i should contribute, and your comment is about as helpful as mine.

i posted for help on guidence on getting it fixed not a lecture on my life haha!

but yeah i'll get it jacked up tomo to some measuring and a good old prod, maybe order a new track control arm from GSF

I went out for over two hours last night, when it was fresh, ragged it everywhere ploughing the main roads, opening up the right hand lanes, carving tracks through the estates and sticks.

It would have been far more fun in the Polo, fly-by-wire is terrible for snow. Still, didn't see a risk though - practice makes improvement and the snow is good for learning control techniques.

There was probably less risk of a serious shunt than usual, with everyone being so slow and careful. But the particularly inexperienced do need to keep their margins ridiculously tight, so the first kerb that teaches you something doesn't do too much damage..

i was fine on the road was just on a cornered steep hill with snow on top of ice, once she started sliding that was it nothing could be done! went from like 5mph to around 10mph with back end hitting curb then the front :/

but yeah only way to learn from mistakes is by doing them in the first place, hands on experince is the only way!

no point in staying in the house being scared, its just a bit of snow, how would you survive in countries that have snow more than a few days a year?

if you never drive in snow then you'll never learn how to drive in snow, and then you're fucked if one time you have to drive in it. fuck it, embrace it, get some experience and then have some fun in it. its shit that its gone tits up this time but life goes on, at least you will have an experience to learn from

I've driven in snow before quite a few times. I'm not scared of driving in it at all. In fact i'm pretty competent. I live in an area with lots of hills and my estate is hardly ever treated. I managed to drive fine, without hitting anything. What i am scared of is the other idiots on the road who have no clue at all of how to control a car in normal conditions let alone snow and ice. The countrys of the world that have regular snow have very different rules to us. Like compulsory winter tyres, and far more extensive driving tuition (IIRC It takes new drivers in Finland 4 years of training until they can take their test), so they all know how to drive on the white stuff.

Had another couple of cm's over night, gonna leave the car parked up till the summer now just incase. Has anyone got any large amounts of cotton wool or bubble wrap? Think I might start wrapping myself up every time I leave the house to protect me from the dangers of the outside world
