Hello all!

First a little about me (feel free to skip) I have been stupidly into car since i was tiny, watching topgear on a sunday instead of going to bed for school! naughty naughty! but seriously cars are my life, pretty much all i think and talk about (apart from sex or drink now and again as a good 17 year old should). have always been around car builds and the like and always have been fascinated with the shape and styling of the old Vw's/ Audis and basically any VAG! especially the very low... Fueled by spending hours gorping at hundreds of pictures from all over the web i have plenty of ideas and plans i wanted to achieve for the first project!

Now about the car; i bought her back in April 2011 when i was 16 in the hope to get most of my ideas and plans sorted before i passed my test and so i could drive a sweet Vdub around for the first car

Model: 1990 Polo saloon MK2

Engine: 1043 cc (YUUCK) soon to be changed

Suspension: Mojo full suspension nice and low!

Brakes: Standard, hardly any

Wheels and Tyres: Smoor roadsters

Exterior Styling: Subtle bits and pieces, find them win a prize!

Interior Styling: Pretty much standard apart from 100 magic trees and a hula necklace

ICE and Security: Good old 12 stack cd changer! pioneer shelf speakers, custom front pioneer's and a custom sub (dual 12" rockford and fosgate) + Alarm

Like I said, its my first car so I'm kinda limited by money; especially with lesson costs, test costs, insurance, tax and the rest of it! but pretty much every pennie i earn goes into the car,friends and family moan their tits off but screw em' its what i want! Also means all most all of it has been done by myself and help from me Dad!

here's the car as i had her:

Nice and high! apologies for the rubbish picture quality (on old phone now got a new camera Yay!)

Took a mission to go trailer her back just under 300 Mile round trip but i think it was worth the price as the interior was mint and the body very tidy!

because the car is at further stages now i will rewind and go though what i did to show, would be much of a build if it went old car, car today now would it!

First things first i did a service on the car and some other tiny bits, oil filter, oil change, water pump, alternator belt and cambelt (just to be sure) and then removed the door protectors because they were basically falling of anyway! then because the exhaust was screwed an whole new standard system was put on for MOT. oh and stickers, i like stickers :)

First port of call was the suspension! Jesus it was boaty and so high! i purchased some Mojo springs second hand of a mate of mine and fitted them literally the day after i got the car cant be having it too high out side my house, would be embarrassing! really unsure how far its lowered it but it is suitably low and i think it looks perfect which was extremely lucky! ( didnt get one of the whole car until the next step Picture:

After the drop I needed some wheels, I looked at the usual, Ats Classics, Starmags etc but wanted something a little different, spent a good few weeks looking through forums and ebay and eventually found some smoor roadsters in shite condition but very cheap! as i like it! so snatched them up and got them delivered!

They look good from here but a closer look would show:

So next was sorting these out as the lacquer had lifted and alot of curbing, with no money DIY it was! MORE TO COME!!

Same!! i wanted something different but i think these look classic and slightly racey! they look better when i post the next step!

Next step was to strip the wheel with paint stripper which took about a day to pick off all the lacquer and poorly fingers!

When the lip was sanded and smoothed nice and cleeeaannn

Now came the difficult decision, keep the centers aluminum colour or paint them and what colour!!? i eventually decided some form of grey and after standing in (dare i say it) Halfords spray paint rack i decided to go for MG ZR Gunmetal grey, after being told it naturally it creates shadow due to the paint fleck in (yummy)

I sprayed a dark grey primer after some sanding and then went with the Gunmetal!

And after they were finished:

Next i polished the lips well with a machine polisher and got them nice and shiney and then re-lacquered them to save deterioration!

I had a set of smoors, they were my first set of 'dish' if you like ha, they're wicked! i have a full set of 4 brand new smoor centre caps if yours are abit rough around the edges dude?

hmm i cant do speed bumps as it is! if i put a straight pipe and got rid of the center box i would be less worried about smashing the exhaust...

I wouldn't be worried about smashing an exhaust dude, its easily replaceable or do what you suggested, chop it out, i have on mine. Regarding speed bumps, just take alternative routes...

what about car parks or through ways where there is no other way?

also its not always the zort that hits its sometimes the sump or this thingy which I'm not sure what it is :S

Go over them at angles, for the love of god don't let your sump hit stuff.

I've only hit the sump once and that was very slowly! i have perfected traversing larger speed bumps but the short ones that you cant go sideways over which catch?

any help?

I hope you keep on top of the dishes now you have stripped off the lacquer?

The bare metal shall get all pitted of you don't, get some wheel sealant, but give them a nice polish first.

Have to agree with my man Brett, its all well and good having a nice set of wheel but then when your arch gap is like it is atm it defeats the object of the small classic looking wheels, they look lost and out of place.

I wouldn;t worry about catching your sump, i hardly ever come across speed bumps, except for the occasonal one on a carpark I've never been to, you should know where most are, you;re thinking too much about it. Just slam it please! ha And yes the dishes will need a fair bit of maintenance as higgo said, for them to stay fresh, especially in recent weather conditions...

How do i go lower then?

without coilovers and the rear tyres rub if i have anyone in the back (rare occasion) but its bad as it is?

You need to roll the lip on the rear arches. You'll be able to feel a flat lip when you put your hands under the arch, that lip needs to be bent back on itself flat against the inside of the arch, so its basically like a U shape instead of an L if you get what i mean? Its either get coillies or cut your springs for a temporary solution?

I've rolled the arched a little, but intend on putting wheel spacers to make more low and wide but i guess if i go lower they will catch like a biach!

The rear springs are too floppy i think, need to be stiffer, and the front wants to go down only a touch to get more rake?

upload a pic of a side shot of your car son. If you put spacers on, you'll rub more unless you roll the arches more?! you can get higher rated springs which will be stiffer, i think the whole car needs to go down a lot..

Thats actually pretty good at the back, see i completely cut off the flat return part of the plastic arch i did, thats how much mine were rolled. they need rolling more so you can lower more and then accommodate for bumps in the road and extra weight of passengers

are your smoors 7j all round?
