More low... YES OR NO!

Featured Replies

Hello taken some pictures but wont let me upload them straight to here for some reason but I've pu them on here: http://s1286.beta.photobucket.com/user/Sam...?sort=3&o=0

first one is which the wheel fully down! two or three coils touching eachother at the bottom as the paint has rubbed off on them where they join

second is of the wheel on and slightly lifted up

third is of no wheel jacked up

looks usual and i assume that the strut must be aftermarket as the coils sit together (if they were normal would they not be taller?)

Thanks

shouldnt be able to fit your phone/hand in the arch :p needs lowering!

yes the first 2 or 3 coils at the bottom are tightly wound and basically never move so it is very safe to just cut a coil or so out

IMG_20121103_121246.jpg

heres a pic of the springs on the front of my car at the moment, you can see how tightly wound the coil i cut off is, its useless and there purely to lengthen the spring

the top on the other hand is another thing all together, no touchy them! if you touch them the spring will not seat properly and fall out like the stupid americans did lowering their car 4.5"

okay this has made alot more comfortable! i cant fit my hand in there! the picture is from outside the arch!

so one complete coil as you did drops by about 10m?

Thanks

( :ninja: might get the grinder out next weekend :ninja: ) ohh wait meant to use a cutting wheel in water? does it matter?

it gives the thickness of the coil in drop so about 10mm

people often mention the use of a blowtorch or plasma cutter etc... to bend or cut the spring but exposing the spring to heat should be avoided, so yeah if you can cut them in water why not!

i didnt though, just an anlge grinder

Your not going to need coolant to cut through a coil just chop it. But you should buy shocks before.

either way with the front, on standard struts your not gonna get it low enough for it to scrub (depending on tyres though) as the shocks will bottom out. rears are a different story.

got 2 coils out of mine and its fine, but I've bottomed it out on the damper a couple times on dirty potholes, thats with cut down bumpstops too.

id only do 1-1.5 coils max as 2 is a tad too much

thats all i plan on doing, will do one and see how it sits if not whip it back off and cut another half

:D

& Simon I was merely pointing out the original post, people ask how to get more power from a GT I gues my new response will be fit a V8...

Would that be a Jaguar V8 that you've developed at work where you work with top end cars all day on the best equipment measuring corner weights of all the cars whose suspension you made?

I agree with higgo, 50mm front, 20mm back

Cutting springs is a bad idea IMO, MK3 struts just aren't designed for it, you will just end up sat on the bump stop with the shock bottomed out (been there, done that, never again)

All depends what you want from the car, i went in head 1st at getting as low as possible, got fucked off, decided 13's are too small and that the AFH 4 branch simply doesnt allow it, neither do the driveshafts, chassis legs, anything really for that matter.

I got coilovers made for going silly low, which they can do.... This was at the max (chassis legs sat on shafts)

Doesn't even look that low does it? But that is resting on driveshafts, and that's with some of the lip on the leg ground back.

Looks sick, completely un-drivable though. Need serious mods to make it work.

I've now completely changed my outlook on going low, looks good but its fucking stupid. Maybe I'm getting old but i cant be fucked with not being able to drive properly anywhere.

I'm still fairly low, downpipe still makes love with the floor far too often, and it looks decent. But more importantly, if i want to, i can drive it fairly hard and have fun in it. And the ride quality is brill.

Hmmm

Hmmm

Surley 10-15 mm of the front wont make that much difference its not like I'm cutting 3 or 4 coils off? the bottom coils are touching anyway so it wont make any difference?

and mines not that low, easily 2" off the floor in the center so a few more mm will sort it! also i dont really carry anything/anyone so it should be fine!

its okay for ragging now (even though its a 1.1 soon to be 1.3 GT) so i cant see by taking one coil off its going to affect it

at the end of the day I'm 17, first car i will have to learn if it fucks up :)

Think its fair to say I've been brainwashed by these extreme lowests and the low King himself!

its cooool! but why so much hate all of a sudden?!

Depends what springs you start off with i guess, i went mad and it resulted in a horrific ride

80mm springs with lowering topcaps, and i took 2 coils off haha!

It ended up metal on metal (top of the strut/top cap) as i had no bumpstops, had to go get some bump stops which actually raised the car a tad.

Was funny while i had it i guess, looked decent. Just plain awful to drive.

You wouldn't have been down 110mm though would you toby? :|

I'm always sceptical of what the claimed height of springs are, my friend bought a brand new philj 80/60 kit and i was running my unknown height (but i thought about 70mm ones) with a coil out and I was easy 20mm lower on the front, I'm not down 100mm on the front though surely? :?

I always just work from how much more lowering is needed, not the claimed height it has been reduced

Id take a coil and a half from the front and one from the back, see how you go

i dont know about the back as the tyre is already in the arch?

think it would look doggo if it was much more?

Also next time i need tyres i will get smaller walled ones so they stretch and then they wont scrub in the arches and then will look lower still ;)

Yeah Simon, definitely a jaguar v8, ensure you corner weight it too or be useless

& FYI I don't do any engine development or corner weight anything haha.

Wasn't really a dickhead comment, just the fact the OP clearly doesn't have the money to buy new wheels. And the question "shall i lower it more" doesn't really say "I think I need bigger wheels?"

But hey. Common sense appears to be a rarity these days haha

Can't believe its taken 3 pages of peer pressure for you to finally agree to chop your springs. Club polo, you really have let yourself down

Its not peer pressure at all!

I'm 17

i dont really know as much as i think i do so i put it too you lot and have questioned as much as i can as i am worried about screwing the car up or hurting myself

thats why its taken three questions as i wasnt 100% sure

my thought process went:

how to lower car

cut springs? coilies? bigger wheels? could save for coilies, dont really want new wheels, chop chop seems easiest and cheapest

are they safe, internet says no some say yes,

seeing people do it help me feel more confident in doing it myself

too the wheel of the polo and had a look

bottom three coils are practically touching

ahh feck it it wont be that bad to chop 1 coil off as the bottom two will still touch and wont screw the dampening meaning it will pass mot

success: keeps it mot passable- looks better- and cheapest - appears safe as others have done it and got on well with them?

Thanks for your concern though! good too see people are looking out for me!

young dubber with so many questions so thankyou for your help EVERYONE!

Sam

No worries Sam ;)

same thing happens on edition all the time. well annoying

'what can i do to my 8v?'

'put an abf engine in'

NO!

Your making it sound asif its a big job because you couldnt be arsed with it, its very easy infact.

I have the smallest of notches (both sides) , more a dimple in the chassis leg and I've got no issues coupled with a 2" engine lift (uprated engine mounts) no exhaust work (custom stainless manifold back, more a performance mod than ground clearance mod) and a few bits of floor 'trimmed' down either by me or the road and then me correcting after I've spotted where its scrubbed.

Its not hard to do it its obviously just more work than you can do/be arsed doing but dont make it sound a hard job as frankly you are wrong.

Oh and doesent look low, no. Measure inner arch to floor and i bet its a respectable measurement, well you could of measured if you had of manned the fuck up rather than saying its daft and stupid because you haven't got the balls.

The downpipe making love to the floor doesent mean its low Toby, it means your exhaust is ill fitting and funnily enough thats more than likely due to the engine being out fo a different car, shocker ay?

Sam, I know you PM'ed wanting a few pics of mine so heres a few for you, there arent many places i have pictures unfortunately.

If your going the chopped spring route please consider holding off for new shocks or just coilovers. You'll encounter alot of issues with shocks and springs as the steering arm on the offside gets close to the brake servo amongst many other things.

Can't really argue with that, good advice.

Also "removed bits of underneath" haha <3
