thanks a lot

The Polo box will suddenly explode at random milage killing everyone.

I'm not bitter.

WIsh i had a lupo gti box and engine in hand ..

Could see how much work is involved, would be ace having a 6 six box lol ..

guessing its cable linkages etc on the lupo box too ?

Ok mate as I've got a 1.6 16v 6n2 engine turbo ed with a knocking bottom end but I've been offered a cheap lupo gti engine and was going to turbo this one from scratch myself so i knew what had been done to it. just wanted to know if my gearbox i have at the mo will fit the lupo engine. which now i know it will not.

also do you know if the exhaust manifold and sump are the same?

thanks

I know this is a dumb question, right?..

But if:

Lupo can be fitted with the AHW engine - the 1.4 16v. Which the 6n2 comes with as standard.

That means the chassis mounts for the Lupo are the same as the Polo - since the engines are the same.

So why can't we just use a Lupo mount to mount a 02* box in the Polo? Then put the 1.8t, etc into it..

Surely then shafts are the right length, etc?

Lupos with 085 gearboxes do use the same driveshafts Adam, yes.

I don't know why not either, I agree it makes sense. Though if it was so easy, why didn't VW do it..?

sorry to gatecrash this thread, but if 085 gearboxes fit the polo gti engine, does that mean a mk3 gearbox should fit?

sorry this is just related to a conversion i am doing at the mo :)

Lupo 6 speed box will not fit a polo engine. There was a polo with a lupo engine and box fitted on here. I know this because I was going to buy it! It was bright green.

cheers guys. doea anyone know if polo manifolds and sumps are the same as the lupo gti ones?

Yes. The GTi's aluminium oil sump doesn't bolt to the MK2F gearbox i presume you're talking about, or a 6n one at that, but that doesn't matter at all. The box mates up and bolts to the block just as it should.

It was owned/built by a guy called Rich, he's not on here. It was destroyed. The engine/gearbox now resides in another 6n2 by someone we'll call.. George. Who is on here. You'll have to search to find out more.

I just think that people go to all this effort of chopping up chassis legs and getting custom shafts made up, when potentially there is a solution from the OEM's themselves..

I'm probably being thick though.

No, theoretically you're right - If Lupo 085 driveshafts fit a 6n 085, then surely Lupo 6-speed driveshafts will fit a 6n 6-speed.

I always look at what's on the shelf, i've always avoided fabrication. Two main reasons - VW's own parts bin is full of fully developed and monumentally tested parts. And secondly they're cheaper, from a breakers they're a hell of a lot cheaper..

There's not much point in the Lupo GTI 6 speed box apparently as the gears are a lot closer so you're still doing similar revs at motorway speeds. You just feel like a rally driver cos you're changing gear all the time - basically, becauseracing.

Yeah but the power could be utilised better..

For examply a valvers power is mainly higher up the rev range and iff u have 6 short gears which are always on revs u wont be waiting around for the powerbands etc ;)

Think the lupo 6spd boxes are hydo jamie

Aye fair point. So basically, becauseracing

Wasn't thinking that though.

Was thinking that you can then mount a tall block into them easily, because if the Lupo GTi uses a 02* box - the same as the Golf, you can fit a 02* box into a Polo with OEM mounts, and then OEM shafts.

There must be something I'm overlooking, surely. But, I was also told I couldn't make my engine work in my car, and that was a piece of piss.

If you can get an 02* box in, then shafts follow. It only makes sense that the engine will bolt to the box and then it's just the drivers mount you've got to suss.

In the 6n/2 I recon so, yes.

Thoughts then surge to the earlier cars, but the engine would not fit between the o/s chassis leg and gearbox.

i know how rich done the conversion into his 6n2... simply because he looked at my car to figure it all out.

Lupo GTIs have a hydraulic clutch and cable shift.... so do 6n2 TDIs... for the 6 speed box anyways!

The hydraulic clutch isn't an issue, I'm more thinking the possibilities of big blocks WITHOUT the need to chop shafts, chassis legs, etc.

As Mikey said, there parts off the shelf are much better than custom, in the way they bolt straight on. There has to be an OEM alternative. Even if it's just for the box and shafts. Then you've just to worry about the drivers mount, which doesn't really matter, since the hard parts are taken care of.

An 02T (Lupo) box is totally different to an 02A or an 02J box.

Using the methods of the six speed won't really help when banging a 20vT into the Polo/Lupo. (A few aspects will)

However, on the topic of the six speed, how do you do it ?

The driveshafts are exactly the same, you can use any Polo/Lupo ones, they're not 02t or 085 specific.

You have to use a Lupo GTI or TDI pedalbox for the clutch set up, you can also use the Polo TDI one. If you use a derv one, you need to change the potentiometer.

The 02T gearbox mounts to the subframe differently, you have to use a Lupo GTI/TDI/PoloTDI subframe, just a simple swap.

The gear selector is different, you can use one from the usual list, bolts straight up.

Now, the box itself. You have to use a Lupo GTI engine, it all mounts up as VW intended and is very straight forward. Wiring though, you have to remove the block loom from the Polo engine and asides from two extensions and one plug change it all fits into place fine, if you want to use the original clips then you have to change the thermostat housing for the Polo one.

Exhaust wise, for some reason they're both slightly different, you can use the Polo but it feels stretchy, the Lupo manifold and cat make it feel better.

Another point is they both mount differently on the subframe, ideally Lupo subframe, Lupo exhaust.

You also have to notch or raise the battery tray because it catches on the shift weight of the 02T box.

There you go, the good six guide, it's really simple when you think about it. You get a better engine cover too.

Now, limited pictures as I wass busy ripping things apart and seeing what fits most of the time, hence why stuff was all over. Doing it again would be easier and so much more straight forward.

This is the pedalbox from the inside, the holes are there just bunged up and it all lines up and fits perfectly.

This is the bay before the engine and box went back in, you can see the clutch set up and the selector, shafts are standard affairs.

Engine and box in, notice the jaunty angle which these sit at, same as a 20V when they're done properly.

Cover was far superior and filled it all out more.

The car felt better for having the six, not just the gears, it shifted better, you could ride the torque more, the clutch was lighter and it just felt like a more complete vehicle. If you've got some spare cash and enjoy playing about, I highly recommend it, this is why I will always look down on you 6n2 five gear queers. Go out and get bummed like the poverty spec raging homos that you are.

See you on the next account. X

Some quality info right there

Yeah that was the one, it was up for sale complete for a while, but by the time I had the finances sorted it had been stripped. I won't get involved in any of these politics! :ninja:

I have had both a Polo GTi and a 6 speed Lupo GTI, and the 6 speed is by far a better gearbox & clutch. Lupo was a more lively car than the Polo.
