Very interested in upgrading my headlight loom on my Polo.

Cannot find one for a Polo. But I found this-

Anyone know if this will fit?

If they need modding the guy said he'll do that, if I can tell him what needs doing.

when fitting it make sure the wires wont rub on any sharp edges and place the relays somewhere where they wont get soaked ...i put mine inside a latex glove and taped it up , or you could use a small ice cream tub type of thing

it is a common fault on a lot of polos up until 1995 atleast

but depends how bright you want your headlights

std is fine if you like candles

get some h4 bulb sets made up with a price and put them forsale up on here they will fly off the shelf this kind of year weather

i think on the bay you can get a single relay wireing loom for about £10er but its not plug and play needs adapting

i used those ones instead..saves having joins

tbh if you can work some crimpers and follow a diagram you can make your own , non of the ebay ones are anything special

I'm using higher wattage bulbs in our 6n and have made up a harness, the difference is awesome. What I did was bought two h4 socket, the type with bare connectors, so you can use thicker wire right up to the bulb. Then got some relays with holders, and again bare connectors, some ring terminals, fuse holdrs and insulated spade connectors. Then got the wire (~15A I think) from euro car parts ( good price with the discount) and finally some big heat shrink to tidy it all up. All in all with the bulbs came out to about £15 so, if your confident with electrics, then shop around and you can get it done how you want for minimal outlay.

But, yes to the op, that harness will do, as mostly the wiring is a little longer, so will fit the polos no probs.

Edit - also, four relays is overkill and unnecessary, one for dipped and one for main, the main thing is resistance in the wiring and vital to getting a good clean ground connection. The pint in using the relay is so the original (tired, thinner) wiring can only drive the relay, and this will have the new (thicker) wire directly from the battery to the lights. The relay can handle 40A so you would need at least 200w bulbs to even get near that, and again, clean connections and good ground is vital.

you say 4 is a overkill

i originaly made a 2 relay set for mine , was good for years then the damp got to the relays and one night they failed while driving , so having a saftey back up isnt a bad idea

i now have 4 in a sealed box..doesnt really cost alot more

I agree, I've just bought all the bits to do mine and risking having no lights with just 2 relays isn't something I'm up for.

I would properly crap myself if it happened, just far too risky for an extra 5 quid or whatever it is.

In theory they should be brighter, so you're probably right

Standard headlights are awful though I want rid of them as soon as possible, basically having to drive around with main beam on at every single opportunity isn't really fun

yep used a box very much like that with a hinged lid , and a cable gland for the wires to go out

if you make the relayed loom up right, nothing, you can revert to the std wiring in the time it takes to unplug 2 h4 connectors and plug the original h4 plugs back on.

This may not be possible if you have chopped your original h4 plugs off though. just depends how you connect the trigger wires up to your old wiring and whether you have reused the h4 connectors for the relayed loom.

I run a 2 relay setup and have done for 4 years or more. the likelyhood of both dipped and main relay contacts failing at the same time is pretty slim, so I personally couldn't be fussed with running 4 relays. I did however use 2 relays that were over-specced, so they will handle way more amperes than they will ever see running std wattage lamps.

yeah one bulb blowing would leave the other still working ...both go out with a relay

choice is yours...simple fact is if the relay goes wrong you lose the lights until youve flicked the dip switch , sounds easy to just flick the switch and carry on but it was scary enough when it happened to me, depends when and where it happens

and nothing stopped me plugging the orig loom back on...

All valid points, it's just your personal preferance and the extra time/cost.

Personally I have always used 2 relays, and as above if they fail then you can just plug them back in. I have run them on my 6n for over three years, they aren't in a box in fact they are hanging loose behind the bumper, I'm actually surprised that they still work really :)

On the latest loom I have made for our 6n2 I have used two relays I found in a bummer at work, basically they have two outputs, so one for each light,and i think that if these fail, they fail in closed circuit (or at least I'm told?), also when I was living in Egypt a few years back I did a fair bit of electrics and the shops there sold a single relay, which was basicallu four in one, and all used a single input. Maybe these are available over here? As they where sealed and had a metal bracket,so would be ideal.
