Got a stone chip the other night in the screen on my golf and it's started to crack so will likely spread.

Anyone got any idea on a cost of a screen fitted? Mk4 golf, don't think it's got a sun strip and I think it's bonded.

Only insured it TPFT as it owes me little so.

If anyone could recommend somewhere near Coventry or somewhere that comes out, or if will be considerably cheaper for me to supply the glass and pay for fitment.

I could probably remove and fit myself but I'd rather have it done properly tbh!

Any help appreciated, I'd like to guess around £250 but I genuinely have no idea how much a screen is or labour!

£130 for a mk2 screen fitted by local fitters. Had to go to them too. So I think your £250 is likely along the right lines

Kettering windscreens charged my brother £70 to supply + fit a screen on his mk3 golf GTI.

You may have to travel but could worth giving them a ring

I've seen 2 windscreen fitters in a car brakers they removed over 20 2nd hand windscreens

i asked what you going to do with all of them they said ( re fit them sell them )

I paid £70 fitted for a green top-tint in my Mark3!

I can make enquiries with someone who does our screens at work. I reckon he can do much cheaper than £250. He'll do a Merc Sprinter screen for £110 fitted and thats one big bit of glass!

Yeah I'll ask at work we often have national windscreens/auto glass in.

And chip repair isn't going to fix a a crack or I'd go give the man in my local supermarket a tenner to inject some stuffs haha.

A new screen was only £75 from VAG last time I got one, and it's an easy job in a pre-94 Polo.

How did i get buggered so hard? Or maybe my memory isn't what it used to be

Get one from a scrappy!

I was quoted £450 to replace my mondeo glass. Although it was bonded and it was a "quick-clear" one too.

Luckily with insurance it cos £70 all in :)

I paid £145ish for a new windscreen on my MK4 Golf.

Then £155ish 2 months later when I cracked it again (dropped wiper arm onto screen)

3 Windscreens on that car in total, only had it a year !

Haha this is my concern, Sod's law ill get it done and break it again, certain road on the way to work always seems to break my windscreen from things flicking up boo.

I'm feeling really lucky. I'm trying to work out when i last suffered a chip and it was almost certainly in the '90s. I've done well over 150k miles since, probably 200.

There have been a couple of big hits that left a dust mark to wipe off, and the gruesome smudge of damaged pigeon organic matter, but whilst the pigeons bones scratched the window seal of the Polo (not to go into the bumper grilles of other cars) no glass was ever broken.

Any tips then? Well, i keep my distance.

Mild tailgating is totally common, and most people don't realize they do it. The general acceptance of distance is in fact unacceptable - everyone i know drives too close, and thus reassure each other where the goalposts are.

But the goalposts are further back, i assure you. Next time you're out there, preferably in better weather, try the two second rule. Try not to hit the person in front whilst you take one second out to fail this..

Stones get flicked up in your lane. By the vehicle in front. But they are made of stone, they come down fast. If you're hitting them regularly, you might wanna try driving with a clear space in front of you - it aint the can-can!

yes fairplay tailgateing at high speed is the most commen way to get stones flicked up that chip your windscreen

i were in the rear car one a 130mph convoy all traveling FAR TO CLOSE the stone's dirt being flicked up was well BAD

someone is going to need a bonnet bumper resprayed

Lmao thanks for the advice on how to drive mikey, I'm in no rush to get anywhere, tend to leave a reasonable distance anyway for planning ahead to be economical and safe, but cheers for the lesson.

Think iv found someone who will supply & fit for £150 locally, that'll do.
