1.8 20v turbo in to a 6n2 polo

Featured Replies

Hey guys and girls, long time lurker, 1st time poster. I've had my 6n2 1.0 polo since september and am thinking of doing the 1.8, 20 valve turbo conversion to it. I already have access to a 2000 model year passat as a donor car so parts wise it"s a start, and I also work in a garage so doing the work isn't an issue. My question is, are there any companies out there that do the engine mounts etc pre-made, or do I have to use various VAG parts/ fabricate my own?. Also what gearbox is it best to use?, which wiring looms do i need to use, and also which driveshafts are suitable for the conversion?, any help and advice is good, thanks.

This info is spread across the forum. Have a look in the build threads.

You need to check the passat engine you have for sludging issue (and signs the head might have been starved from oil).

i'm sure a passat engine is mounted longitudinally instead of transverse like a polo so thats one problem to start with.

i would be surprised if you actually do this, as so many people ask this question and nothing ever happens, hopefully you will be the exception.

Thanks for inlcuding me Harry ;)

Loads of info on here about it, pretty much nearly everything is covered.

But you need to start of with a Transverse engine. i.e. Golf, Ibiza, A3 etc... not passat,A4

does the 8v passat 1.8 not fit onto a diesel 6n gearbox? owner at a vag tuners i know casually mentioned it to me? if its anything like the cvh ford engines, the transverse long swap involves matching the bellhousing and drilling for a dipstick lol

Iirc the 6n diesel does have a bellhousing that bolts to the tall block engine (although probably not the passat for reasons stated above). Problem is the bellhousing still has a 085 gearbox at the other end which wouldn't last long with even a standard 20vt powering through it.

The best route gear box wise would be to use the 20vt box but this will mean more fabrication, custom drive shafts ect... But at least it won't shit itself every time you boot it

This. It's how i was gonna run a carb'd 1.8 16v lump, but i decided the gearbox wasn't strong enough after breaking a few with 1.6 engines.

The 1.8T fwd gearbox is the same design as Golf3 VR6, Golf4 TDi, VR5 etc, the problem you have there is gearing. The Golfs all have big wheels, my bet is you go for a Lupo GTi unit which is also the same, or the longest ratio TDi unit you can find, because your smaller wheels will gear it down.

Having changed a clutch in a Golf4 TDi recently, i found clearance to the subframe to be a bit of a pig - so if the 6n2 subframe is smaller then good luck with that.

Dunno about drive shafts, they're tubular, you'll probably have to get one or both shortened.

Cables for the gear remote and a hydraulic line for the clutch, your main fitting challenge as far as i can see is mechanical packaging.

since when was the 6n 16v gearbox strong enough? if it fits nice and not much needs fabricating a 1.8 8v running 100ish bhp and relativly good torque should be fine compaird to the 16v on the chocolate box? or is it the same box with a diff bellhousing? just assumed a diesel box would be alot stronger as they tend to be

Who said the 16v box was strong enough? And strong enough for what?

It's just a different bellhousibg mate, if there was an 085 gearbox that could take decent power without the risk of self destruction the G40 boys would be all over them

This, is, too, faking, true. -__-

Half decent power/13's/aggressive shifter (ME)/becauseracecar i managed to get through 3 85 boxes in 3 months

The torque factor is the killer, so a 1.8 8v just isn't even worth trying imo.

I'm not a boy racer, nor redline every gearchange... I'm more thinking of the practicality on a motorway.. plus, torque = more pulling force = dead gearbox, would a longer final gear not reduce this down a little and make for a weak ish but respectible motorway muncher of a 6n?

when i said strong enough, plenty friends have blown up 6n gearboxs left and right in both 8 and 16v config, mine has just had a new gearbox for obvious boy racer reasons.. but I've known of well looked after cars with original box's with high mialage.. its down to how you drive them surely?

not everyone who tunes there cars rags the living shit out of them :) i like lots of lazy power.. if your all saying it would still just break ill rethink that one.

The boy racer element doesn't come into it when it's not revs that kill the boxes.

My first multicarb'd 1.6 8v used to eat 085 gearboxes for breakfast, the first one on the same day I fitted the engine, yet it didn't have the top end power of the more revvy 1.6 16v i progressed to, which didn't break a single gearbox in double the mileage. Even the 1.4 8v had a higher top speed, and that was never gonna break a box.

Full torque doesn't tend to be delivered with a fully open throttle either. So your part throttle trumps the boy racer's redline for gearbox-shearing leverage. You intend to put full torque into the gearbox between 1,500-3,000 rpm, let's say regularly using half throttle at 2k, then a torquey engine could make mincemeat out of the box in days. Or hours, iny experience.

The G40 bods have realised that converting to turbo is kinder to the gearboxes. Even with low lag, the little 1.3's torque is cushioned with an off-boost turbo.

But with a supercharger hammering it in there in line with engine speed, the torque is full-metal amplification and thus harder on gearboxes.

If you must try a tall block with an 085 I highly recommend a dual mass flywheel. There is one available for that set up, it'll act as a damper to reduce the 4-cyl hammering effect and could be quite effective.

doesn't the 6n diesel come with a DMF?

Like your style.

doesn't the 6n diesel come with a DMF?

Yep, at least the later ones do, and that's the one. Only holds a 180mm clutch, could easily be opened up for a 190. But as the DMF is kinder on clutches than a solid fly, 180 should be fine for a 1.8 non-turbo in a Polo.
