Hello!

I'm Mike I live in the north east, I have been searching for a while for an old aircooled model but after looking around there really wasn't much in my price range that I could work on (I don't have a permanent garage) so after writing the beetle plan off I decided I would look for an older watercooled model that needed a bit of work to get me back on the road in a VW.

I stumbled across this car and it didn't need any work at all and T&T, its actually in amazing condition and has only done 42K from new with full history! I had never seen a saloon model before so instantly searched for polo saloons and found myself on club polo! I've seen plenty of nice saloon builds on here aswell as many other polo models!

So far I've taken off the bump strips and all plastic arches & sills I was surprised to find no rust at all underneath them!

mainly been touching up stone chips and painting bits in the engine bay, I plan to buy a Phil J 80mm kit and I should have some P slots soon (if City Link manage to find my parcel ) other than that the car will be staying fairly standard as its in such great condition that I'd like to keep it looking fairly OEM

Looks very nice, an 80mm kit will ruin the car, I went for a 70/60 but it was too low for me to use every day, then I went for 40 all round but it had loads of reverse rake so I went back to standard on the rear and it looks and drives fine.

Ok, I will take a look at some other lowering kits, just want to get wheels sitting nicely in the arches really!

Grungeisdead has an H&R cup kit for sale in the for sale section. Best lowering kit about for early polos, I'd recommend at least having a look. Cheap kits give a cheap ride that soon gets tiring (i had one)

Really makes a difference. I have a KW kit on mine atm, and although stiff, it's not crashy like the cheap kit I had before. You pays your money, you makes your choice

I've never had a lowered car before, I had a bmw 328i sport with bilstein shocks + springs which was very low anyway and the ride was stiff but certainly not an uncomfortable daily. how do the cheaper sets compare to say a TA technics coilover set up?

Some good advice above. Don't go too low. I've got a weitec 60/40 on one saloon and an eibach 40ish mm springs with bilstein dampers on the other. Both look low enough. It's all about the rear ride height on the saloons, if you're not careful it can end up lower at the back than the front.

TA technics anything is going to be harsh as they are the budget choice. I've not had coilovers however, so can't give much advice. The TA technics damper and spring set up was very stiff.

Gaz: I don't think its the back being lower. I'm certain the arches are lower, making it look lower

I'm not sure, either way it spoils the stance if it's ass down. They look like that from the factory granted. My brother's coupe is on stock suspension and I don't think it needs lowering at the back at all.

I've seen a fair few on line with the front higher than the back. I shall keep an eye out for some good quality shocks, it seems as if its worth spending a little more on a better quality set.

Gaz I saw your picture thread and the Polo looks spot on, are the wheels G60s or mk3 steels?

If that has the 60 40 kit on my car should look about right on my 14" P slots

My other saloon is currently looking very sorry for itself. I need to clean it up this weekend so I can take some pics. It's currenly on some coupe S alloy wheels with balloon tyres but I'm planning on fitting some minilites this weekend.

I didn't think a 15 would fit with any lowering but it sits very nicely on those wheels

After having a look at my car I think the 60 40 kit with 14 inch wheels should look pretty good to, I'm not keen on the idea of the car being a total nightmare to get around so the 80mm kit would probably be a bit much!

I'm running budget springs and shocks on my mk2 coupe 80mm front and back the ride is seriously harsh and occasionally scrapes on bumpy roads so I'd suggest not going that low, I'm looking at getting a nice coilover set to save my back

A set of coilies would be perfect for me I think but £450 is a bit out of my price range to be honest!

Although £450 is expensive compared to shocks/springs its cheap for coil overs, so they will give s harsh ride again. The dampers in them are often just the ones from the budget shock/spring kits.

With the car being so well looked after and low milage etc... I have decided not to modify it, I have Cleaned under the sills and wheel arches and put the trim back on.

Was all set to lower it and put new wheels on but I can't do it to such a good example.

Will keep this as it as and possibly try to find a breadvan to mess about with!

going down the OEM route and will work my way around the car cleaning and polishing, Detailed the car today with my new DAS6 and it looks really good, Will get some pics up asap :)

Haven't updated this for a long time! went to a couple of vw events in the summer and the car got a lot of attention, guessing mainly because at the time it was standard and very unusual to see!

Anyway, I've got a H&R 60 40 kit , I've only done the fronts so far which was a bit of a nightmare thanks to one seized nut! will put the back springs on as soon as I find a suitable place to support the rear end while work on the rear beam? would be grateful for any ideas!

New JVC CD player, I found some deeper speakers the same size as the originals so used the OEM speaker covers which IMO is great as I'm really not keen on the look of sound equipment especially in older cars!

Still Rolling on standard wheels as I've recently moved out of my parents house and that's taken literally all of my spare cash unfortunately!

here's a new pic anyway will try to update more in the coming weeks as I get this lowering kit finished!
