Back then would have cost me £23ish to fill my tank. Not the £82ish it costs me now. So basically what I spend in a week would have done me almost a month!

Yea was about 70p for me to, remember seeing clarkson testing the Lupos on the M25 i think it was was around 70p or there abouts....

I remember when i first past my test, diesel was at 93p a litre... and i thought it was cheap!

I was doing deliveries for a take-away back then and i said if it ever got to £1 a litre i'd sell the car and walk...

22 years later it's way past £1 a litre...i have more than one car and have shag all intention of walking anywhere

I passed my test in '92 and the lowest i remember it it was 47p a litre. I used to get 10.01 litres for a fiver with my first car.

But i was on a reasonable wage of £7.5k a year, and they're paying the staff almost £20k now. A 4 bedroom detached house here could be had for little more than £100k and the same one now cost near £300k.

Car insurance isn't that far out either - that first car of mine was a 9yr old 1300cc Escort worth a grand, which equates to an 04 plate 1.6 Focus today worth over £2k. It cost me £525 to insure when i was 17, which equates to around the £1500 quid it'd cost today.

Like-for-like, thanks to the inflation/growth concept, petrol was about the same as it is now in relation to the cost of living. Things haven't got any harder than it was then. It's always been this bad.

I have to disagree, In a normal situation yes that is how it works, but we have been in a recession for quite a while now, and while prices are soaring with fuel/food etc no one is getting any pay rises unless your working for a company thats gaining from the recession. look at the last couple of months, down here some places have put there petrol up by 7p per litre since christmas....has anyone had cost of living increase from there work recently, there less common now days

This recession may be double dipped but it ain't dipped very deep either time.

All depends where you live really though, in Norfolk in 1991 my parents bought their 3 bed detached house for £38k, today it is suposedly worth £270k. At that time petrol was 41p a litre it is now £1.40. Also a pint of adnams bitter was 80p, its now about £3.50.

But people are definately not getting payed 3x the amount they were 20 years ago, even though the cost of living has easily exceeded that.
