Hey,

After some self adhesive cloth type wiring harness/loom tape for my car, some bits are peeling on the original loom and it looks tired so I want to wrap it again to tidy it up.

Just wondering if anyone can recommend a decent brand, instead of risking some random eBay item which will be peeling off in a few months time.

Around 1" wide would be nice,

I hope Yoof chips in here, on the standard G hes just about to sell hes re-wrapped the loom and it looks mint!

Also A bit unsure how to do my megajolt loom, as harness tape is a pain to work with if you need to get to the harness, might rewrap the standard loom and then use braided sleeving stuff for the MJ

Loom tape is thinner than insulating tape and is NOT self adhesive.

You can make a very neat job indeed by laying the end of the tape on the cables (or existing loom tape) and then half lapping each turn of the tape and trapping the loose starting end as you work along.

If you apply the outside of the tape to the cables/loom, it is easier to keep it under tension as you complete each turn.

Keep the spacing equal, so that each turn covers exactly half of the previous turn and keep the tape tight at all times.

Finish with a slip-knot, which you should be able to keep out of sight.

Loom tape can be self-adhesive (the OEM VAG stuff is), not all stuff is self-amalgamating!

Make sure that whatever you buy is the correct temperature range, and anti-propagating/flame resistant.

Tesa and Certoplast are good search terms to use! You'll find a lot of Coroplast stuff advertised, that's furry rather than cloth and intended for wrapping interior harnesses rather than under-bonnet.

Not considered the cable tidy system found on modern cars? Corrugated tubing with a series of clips and joins that allow it to be fastened to various objects.

Be careful with the plastic conduit. If you're recycling OEM stuff it'll be fine, but some of the cheap aftermarket stuff isn't flame retardant. I've seen a prototype vehicle go up in flames at Millbrook because of that!

Most of the harness manufacturers have nice conduit joiners for getting round 90° bends or banging a t-piece in or whatever. If you can find enough suitable bits then it's an easy way to protect a harness - but if you've got a tortuous route with lots of tight bends then you might be better off taping it.

I've got the jeb end of some Scapa 3380, but I'm keeping that! Certoplast 525SE is an equivalent, and that's cheap enough on eBay.

Good point - but as you've probably figured by now, if it's on my car and VW didn't put it there, then it's from a scrap yard.. Some of it's form a 6n2, some from a Vectra, and the rad fan section i know is from a Megane (along with the plug & radiator itself) - it's all generic/universal metric stuff and the couplings are all compatible. It's probably all made by the same company..

The stuff that doesn't conform may not even be dodgy, you can get it for indoors and that stuff probably won't be for outdoor use, so you need to ensure it's automotive. Which i do by being a pikey and using breakers yards :-D
