Long story short, my stereo isn't working, its a JVC head unit, pretty basic and only cost me about 50 quid. Its now not working, I've checked the fuses etc and all seem to be fine. So then I plugged in the vw radio/cassette player to see if that would work. It came on, and displayed the word 'safe' then displayed '1000' now I know there is power to it, but the original radio doesn't work, but comes on! And the JVC one doesn't do anything at all. Can anyone shed some light on the problem?

It was originally working, right? If so have you checked the fuse on the radio itself?

Have you changed anything wiring wise relating to the radio?

You could temporarily disconnect the yellow and red wires, then connect both to either the yellow or red. If it turns on on either of them then connect them, and then try the if Orion, if icomes on and off with it, then the constsant power is off, so is likely a fuse, if it's on all the time then either the fuse, or the switch. You can also try pushing the key further into the ignition as its a common thing for the switch to fail.

If the original radio came on and displayed safe that to me means there is nothing wrong with the wiring. This is the screen you would enter the radio security code. You can try what was suggested above, but if you have checked that and your still having problems i would say its something to do with your radio.

Cheers, i checked all the fuses and they were all fine so i then connected a power supply to my radio using a little home made wiring loom. The radio came on when i did that. so i checked the wiring behind the radio and disconnected the red and yellow wires, swapped them around and now the radio works, but i have to turn it on rather than having it come on when the key is turned.

If you have a meter or test lamp check for voltage on the red and yellow wires.

You may have said elsewhere but what model car and also is the radio holding its memory - station pre-sets etc?

I think the problem is that it isn't holding the stations. Sounds like maybe the ignition live fuse has blown..

If the fuses are certainly not blown then play around with the ley in the ignition, so hold it in and wiggle it around. You will havé to swap thé wires back first if It cônes on for even à second while you hold the key, it is the switch.
