Its been happening for a while now and wanna get round to sorting it out.

When i start the car cold, i need to give it some throttle and then when it does start it rumps lumpy and wont idle properly until warm?

any ideas what to do to fix this ?

If you are quite sure that it runs OK once it is up to temperature, then it sounds as if the automatic choke (if you still have one) is not working correctly.

These things are adjustable, but before you alter the setting, it would pay to get a tin of carb cleaner and clean up all of the choke mechanism, then oil it with something like 3-in-1 oil. NOT WD40, as this will not last long.

Again before you disturb the setting, it would pay to check for any vacuum leaks on the carburettor mounting and the inlet manifold and check/change spark plugs, HT leads, distributor cap and rotor arm.

If the above does not cure your problem:

1) When the engine is COLD, remove the air cleaner top, note the position of the choke butterfly. Press the accelerator pedal ONCE, this should allow the butterfly to close.

2) If the choke does NOT close, it may need adjusting. The black plastic dome on the side of the carburettor houses the bi-metallic choke closing spring, there are three screws holding this dome in place. using something like a dab of Typ-Ex fluid, mark the relative position of the dome to the carburettor body.

3) Again, with the engine COLD, slacken off these three screws by about one turn. Grasp the plastic dome and SLIGHTLY turn it until the choke just does close, tighten the screws and see if there is any improvement.

If you have turned the dome too far, you will tend to get the opposite problem - The engine will start OK, but won't run well when hot - This is why I suggested that you mark the original position, it allows you to make further adjustments without guessing the position.

You may have to make several adjustments, but ALWAYS do this with the engine COLD.
