Car has no MOT or TAX

Featured Replies

Hey wondering if someone can help me out. I am going to view a car with no current MoT or TAX. If I purchased said car I would need to move it from it's current location to a MoT test station.

Now I know that to move a car without an MoT you must be on route to an MoT center with an appointment booked...correct? What I don't know is that without an MoT or TAX how can I get insurance to do this?

Any help on this matter would be appricaited!

Thanks in advance!

P.S I could probably get it on a trailer...but I don't own one nor a car with a tow bar. This might proove to be expensive as well. I don't DelG40 would be up for towing my car back 86miles to Aberdeen either!

Direct trip to the nearest MOT station isn't a problem. Pre-book your test and get them to write it down on a bit of headed paper. If you're pulled, show them it and pass the attitude test and you'll be fine.

drive it and hope you dont get caught :-p

As /\, but make sure you are insured, ect...

As long as you're insured you can drive it to an MOT test station or a place where it is getting repairs for an MOT.

if its on a rope or a towing bar its ok...i think.with a sign in the back window "on tow". correct me if I'm wrong

A rope's never ok, it's not a legal way of towing a car, except in an emergency. Tow pole is a grey area, but, again, should be looked at as an emergency only.

you learn somthing everyday.when i worked on a car pitch,we used to use towing bars at least once a week with no trouble

well you don't need MOT or tax to get insurance, so you'll be OK driving to a pre-booked MOT, back again if it fails.

Yeah, I use them a fair bit too :ninja: As I'm aware, they're not strictly illegal, just not ideal.

An A-frame, dolly or trailer are the only "proper" ways of doing it.

ditto use a tow bar with on tow sign,... just got mine back yesterday with my gf's celica tow'ing the polo for about 10miles,..no trouble at all but mine has bout 3weeks mot left an no tax

you cant drive it 83 miles to an mot station, its too far, your supposed to go to the nearest one i think. either tow it or if it will pass the mot then take it to a nearby test centre.

just a word about towing....

... dont use ropes on a car with a servo fitted, because if you coast your brakes may not work, and you may end up using the towing cars rear bumper to stop

I’m in the same situation cars not MOT'ed or taxed, and can’t get taxed until MOT'ed etc.

Thinking about the insurance, ok you can get it but I’m sure it invalidates your policy if you are driving without tax and/or MOT. And therefore if you crash into someone then you won’t be covered.

So, how do you do it legally? Or does just breaching the terms of the policy does not equate to breaking the law? Or would it be argued that you were driving knowing that in an accident the insurance would not pay out. Or…. (Actually I’m going to leave it there as my head is about to explode) :)

I was told that if you're towing a car without tax or mot then you can still get done for it. However, if you take something off the car that means it cant run then you'll be ok.

Like when i was younger and had a motocross bikes, we had to take the spark plug out whilst pushing it along the road.

towing the easyest way

I've got a similar problem. I've just brought a polo, it has 12 months MOT but no Tax, i can't tax it until i sign the V5 Form and wait for my insurance cover note which could be another few days! Is it legal to drive it home tomorrow, bearing in mind it is about 25 miles away with no tax.

I'll have a receipt saying i've just purcahsed the car, MOT certificate, V5 green slip and i'm already insured on it, just don't have the cover note.

Cheers

Rhian

u will be fine, if u did get pulled just be honest with the copper and say u are going to get it tax as soon as u get the ins cert.

I've yet to see an insurance policy that would be invalid with no tax. But you will still get a fine for not displaying a valid tax disc if caught, though not points. Some councils have been known to remove and destroy untaxed cars left unattended - so if stopping off for lunch, use the drive-thru!

there is nothing on the Highway code that says you can't use a tow rope, or should use a tow bar.
