Depends on year when license was acquired. But I passed my licence last year and can tow up to the gross weight on license 3.5t I think

Just had this same problem with one of my mates, wanted to buy a trailer and start towing. If they have a grandad lisence they can do what they want pretty much. I passed my test 4 years ago, i can tow up to a gross of 3.5T but can only tow certain types of trailers, not including a car trailer.

Theres loads about it on the dvla site.

The combined weight of both car and trailer must not exceed 3500kg or the maximum train weight for the vehicle.(whichever is lower)

Also the maximum authorized mass of the trailer must not exceed the kerb (empty) weight of the towing vehicle.

For example: say the towing vehicle has a kerb weight of 1700kg and a maximum train weight of 3600kg you can only tow a trailer with a maximum weight of 1700kg, leaving you 100kg for your weight any passengers and anything you have with you.

(Unless the kerb weight has been calculated with a drivers weight usually 75kg giving you 175kg this only applies to some vehicles and it will be written in the owners manual if it's the case.)

Say combined weight of the trailer plus the towing vehicle is 3000kg but the trailers plate says it's maximum authorized mass is 3500kg, even though the actual combined weight is under 3500kg you can be prosecuted for not driving according to your license and having no insurance.

The only exception to this is if the vehicle weighs 3500kg you are still allowed to tow a trailer with a maximum weight of 750kg, provided the maximum train weight is not exceeded.

There are no restrictions on type of trailers you are allowed to tow on a cat B license as long as the trailers weight complies with the law
