Will a petrol gearbox fit in my diesel 6n?

Featured Replies

Hi, I've gt a 1997 1.9d 6n and the gearbox is dead . Just wondering if the petrol gearbox will fit directly in. I know the ratios are different but it's just to get her moving again.

Cheers

Yes, but you will need to use the diesel bellhousing. This effectively opens the gearbox and changes an outer bearing race, but i've swapped a couple of bellhousings now without a problem. If the bearing race in the diesel gearbox is pitted, it comes out quite easily in exchange for the better one in the healthy donor unit, i have no idea if a new bearing is available individually as opposed to being supplied in a kit.

If you source another diesel gearbox, you should sell your one as spares instead of scrapping it, even though it isn't worth much - the bellhousing allows 085 gearboxes be bolted to tallblock engines and the more common Golf type short block 1.6 16v engines, and they're getting thin on the ground. They also allow the use of DMF's, which reduce stress on gearboxes and could then benefit the more powerful older Polos in time if the trend goes that way - i intend to keep one if i find it for peanuts, as i'll happily convert to a DMF if this gearbox doesn't last.

DMF?

DMF?
