4 speed to 5 speed conversion?

Featured Replies

Afternoon everyone! Just wondering if my 1.3 GL could have a 5 speed gearbox put in place of my 4 speed? I've heard the whole gear linkage set-up is the same apart from 1 link bar is needed as it's longer than what's on the car. And if so what gearbox could i put in? Would be great to do over 40 mpg and reduce the RPM's as it currently does about 35.

Thoughts? Mark.

all you need is the 5 speed gearbox, 5 speed anti-roll bar and the 5 speed gearbox mount.

i am using a 4 speed linkage in my 5 speed conversion with no issues.

Flywheel and clutch from a 5-speed (or later 4-speed) as well if you're sticking with the original HH engine. I did the same thing on mine. I changed the linkage too. You might not need to but I've never tried it with a 4-speed linkage.

Cheers guys. What gearbox would fit- one from a Polo or a Golf? I need to look into this a bit further as i'm seriously considering doing it.

Anything up to a 1.3 and up to 1992 will fit, polo or golf. Later gearboxes will fit if you change the driveshafts.

Great Gaz- the box is off the Polo Classic being broken atm on here (g183 sba) with a 1.3 engine in and the driveshafts are the same right through from 82-90 before the mk2f polos came out.

Cheers, Mark.
