6n2 front anti roll bar problem

Featured Replies

I have read countless posts till my eyes bled. But have found no sensible answers to my problem. My issue is I am very low and the rollbar hits the chassis . Answers I have seen for this issue are

1. Ignore it

2. Ziptie rubber over where it hits to mask the noise.

3. Remove anti roll bar

4. Notch the chassis

5. Raise the vehicle.

None of the ubove are sufficient or adequate .is there any other way to solve the issue. I'm thinking modified mounts? Anyone have any ideas.

If you're that low the anti-roll bar really isn't doing anything, so I'd probably remove it..

Also, if none of the above are suitable, you're pissing in the wind, that's really the only option. The problem is clearance between the bar and the body, unless you shift one, you're going no-where.

Has anybody ever removed the roll bar. And do you think fitting upper and lower strut braces would make up for it in a small way

Lower won't help because you're too low. They go on the two points on the bottom of the subframe, IIRC, and it'll catch on anything.

Upper, maybe. But if it's that low, you can't seriously push too hard because it'll catch all the time.

This may be a long shot as I can't remember exactly what the 6n2 roll bar looks like, but is it possible to put it on upside down? Have seen this done before, though I can't remember what car it was on

Well I will answer that question tomorrow . I will see if.it is possible. That is the sort of answer i was looking for. Thankyou. I will post up with news of a yes or a no tomorrow.

I would say removing the arb will stop it hitting.........

I did end up with a valver in totally original condition, it went and handled very well, but it had been lowered previously. This was obvious with the omission of the front ARB.

Now i loved how it handled once put back up to standard ride height. It pivoted over onto three wheels nicely. But i should point out that it did end up being rolled across a farmers field one morning, after understeering on black ice..

Correct , however would this be safe? Or detrimental to the handling etc.judging by your username you should have experence ofthis . What have you done?

Did you not put the antiroll bar back on?

And how did it drive/handle when.it was low without the anti roll bar?

Just out of curiosity, have you had a chassis notch yet?

As others have said if you are low you won't experice much body roll. I still have mine in and it has been scraped flat from constant bottoming out. The only issues I had were the driveshaft rubbing the chassis on the drivers side and the corner of the arb rubs and squeaks on the chassis passenger side. Both of which I've just put up with as it comes with being low. I've never really got annoyed to the point of removing the arb. I'm changing wheels up to a 15" soon and will probably notch and remove it to go lower.

How low are you? Pics?

Well if you can pop it upside down let me know as I can further this advise to other forums I'm a member of. Also I would never remove the arb, it may not effect the handling but will upset the structure and strength, the suspension system is designed around having an arb so is really a vital part of the structure. Even if its not fully functional. I mean you wouldn't take a wishbone out would you? As an actual mechanic I would def not advise it, plus it leaves your tracking very vulnerable to knocks and bumps :)

^^ The only problem with that philosophy Joe is that with 6n/6n2 not all models got the ARB as standard. Wasn't fitted to 1.0 versions or some 1.3 and 1.4 models. And it doesn't hold anything together, it is only indirectly connected to the suspension via bushes, its purely added onto a setup designed to run without one.

We're not talking about MK2's here.

And do you think fitting upper and lower strut braces would make up for it in a small way.

No, they won't. Fitting stiffer springs will help your roll stiffness, but at the expense of ride quality.

Removing the ARB is safer than running the car silly low - as Mikey said, some of the 6N/6N2 models didn't have an ARB from the factory. If you're massively low you've got very little bump travel, so I'd say any factor of safety you lose in the handling from the lack of ARB is irrelevant due to having lowered it so much as to compromise the handling anyway.

Yeah that's true. My mates 6n didn't have one. Also you can still drive safely without one. If your worried about your tracking going out and getting knocks and bangs then going low isn't going to help.

Fair point, didn't realise they didn't come as standard on those models. I'd still be cautious though if you are driving high speeds round corners because unless you have mini style suspension you need the arb, however stiff you feel the suspension is, you can still lose control not having the arb

Do you honestly believe VW would put a car on the market that was inherintly unsafe without the ARB!! I know my old 1.4 never had one and I managed to avoid it putting me in a ditch at every corner  , the ARB was fitted as an improvement to handling, not to correct a faulty design,, and by lowering the car by stupid amounts you've already comprimised the comfort and handling of the car :? so the ARB will have no effect anyway 8-)

As the post above states it's to improve handling. Some cars don't have them. You won't end up in ditches if you remove it. If you lower the car it improves is vastly as centre of gravity is lower and what not. When I have to raise mine up for mot the car feels unsafe! It feels a lot tighter and solid dropped.

It's up to you really now, you can drive fine without it and it will remove you noise issue.
