Cruise Control Retrofit Guide For VW POLO 9N/9N3

Featured Replies

Another thanks to the OP for this guide. 🙂

I've just yesterday decided to give it a go, fully DIY without tailor-made loom.  Got a new old stock genuine stalk set from ebay for not too much, already had a connector with wires in that will go in the onboard supply control unit and have just acquired a few of the crimps to suit the stalks connector from this helpful ebayer: https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/2009nutnut/m.html?_trkparms=folent%3A2009nutnut|folenttp%3A1&_trksid=p3542580.m47492.l71970

He has both 000979009E and 000979009EA for sale, amongst many other types, and he confirmed to me that the only difference between those two numbers is one is 'selective gold-plated', the other not. I've gone for the goldie ones 'cos 'why not'?

nige8021 kindly helped me find that one of those two part numbers appears to be the correct one to add the wires into the stalks connector. 👍

Once I've got all the bits and pieces and checked that I can get it going I'll post up the wiring diagram* and any tips I pick up along the way. The wiring diagram shows a diode in series with one of the wires from the stalks, which is described as a 'blocking diode'.

With @nige8021's help I was able to identify this as the common 1N4007 type or possibly the 1N5408 beefier version which superseded the former in ETKA. That may have been simply rationalisation as the latter was used more often/elsewhere but I guess it makes sense to use this higher current/voltage rated part just in case the former was found to be inadequate for this application in the fulness of time. Either should only be pennies each from electronics retailers.

.

I'm not planning on running the engine ECU wire the proper way, but will take another, easier way through into the engine bay with it, to avoid the dash removal grief.

  • There are wiring differences between the 9N1/3 and the 6R as in there are 6 wires for the 9N1/3 and only 3 for the 6R this is reflected in the part numbers 6Q0953513 F or G for the 9N & same basic

  • OK, here are some loom pics as promised.  I used a black connector instead of the correct light brown one for the XS3 connector, so I include details of how to cut it to make the keying work. Wir

  • Wiring diagram with a few notes added by me.  The junction labeled A100 is where the black/blue wire that goes to brake pedal switch pin 2 comes from.

Stalks arrived yesterday, crimp pins for adding to that should be with me tomorrow or Thurs. Just ordered 10-off 1N5408 diodes for £2 via Amazon, cos although I have 1N4007s by the dozen already, peace of mind through fitting the beefier one is worth that much.

Below is a pic of the engine bay side white wire location, this is in behind wiper motor, with lid off the relevant interconnect box.

To get to here you need to remove the wiper arms, the plastic cover over the scuttle area, the wiper motor and mechanism and realistically the vertical metal panel that the engine ECU is attached to. (A few 'star' clips that just unscrew, a few T30 torx screws and a few plastic fittings here and there.)

Put up the right picture, instead of previous duff info

Completed this on Saturday without any major dramas.

Fed the wire through from engine bay side (good opportunity to clear out water-box/scuttle area which needed it), through unused pin 1 of unused connector A* in the image above. Central Tx30 releases that whole engine bay connector group, revealing a hole where connector A is/would be. Viewed from inside I could see daylight with that cover in front of the relay panel removed.

Cut the original white wire and soldered to the newly threaded one:

I found some of the airbag/clock-spring/stalks/stalks connector removal quite faffy as I'd never done any of those things before.

I've probably got enough bits to make a couple more looms, including some of the correct crimp pin for T11a wire en-route.

Might even have a look at modding the old stalks to the Russian-style** DIY converted just for giggles.

* Not all Polos necessarily have this same missing connector

Just realised I'm missing something.

Namely the little green light in the cluster that says 'cruise active' or symbol to that effect.

Will check if there is an LED in that position as a first line of enquiry.

Think I read that from MY2003 it should be, and mine's an MY 2004??

Looking on ElsaWin there should be a symbol between the temp & fuel gauges but there is no pin allocated to it so I would assume it sent via the CanBus so might need to check the coding for the speedo ?

I tried looking up cluster coding and adaptations earlier, without coming across anything that leapt out at me as relevant.

Agree on the CAN though, so hoping it's just LED omitted, I have a spare cluster in bits I can rob one off.

Can't get on the case before tomorrow though.

Hi all,

As @Pete1I also want to make DIY wiring harness loom. I've looked at couple GRA wiring diagrams and on every wiring diagram wires used to connect T6y and T41 plugs have 0.35 mm2 cross section. Is 0.35 mm2 enough or it should be used wires with greater cross section? Also how long should wiring harness loom be? From the wiring diagram I would say I need 7 different wires. Is 7 meters (21 feet) enough for wires or I need more?

Yep, 0.35mm² is fine to use. It's also known as 22AWG, I think more commonly.

Length-wise, about 700mm should be enough for the section between stalks and 6-way connector at the onboard supply control unit. If you want to do it ultra-OEM, you probably route the wiring right around the back of the steering column, which my require it to be a bit longer, but I didn't bother with that.

Some other tips I picked up along the way - if you don't want to bother getting involved with the fusebox for the power feed, it is present at pin 2 of the brake pedal switch connector,  which you can open fairly easily by hinging out the top area of plastic near the wire entry, then using a 'standard' de-pinning tool to withdraw the relevant crimp.  I just soldered the new wire onto the top of the existing crimped connection.

The 6-way connector at the onboard supply control unit has part number   6Q0937702A and is beige in colour.  It's black and red 'cousins' may be more readily available. They are 6Q0937702, and 6Q0937702B respectively. The only difference is the keying which can very easily be adjusted with a pair of side-cutters removing a bit of plastic that would otherwise prevent insertion.

I may add some photos of the wire locking mechanism that must be defeated to release the airbag from the centre of the steering wheel.  Despite having watched videos of people quickly and easily undoing these, it took me a while as it was my first time, and I did not have a mental image of what I was trying to do 'up the hole'.  Some photos taken 'from within' may help others to visualise what's required, I think.

By this you meant to override connection to fuse SB4 and removing fuse and relays housing. Instead o that you have just connected wire from T41/28 to pin 2 on the brake pedal switch. Is pin 2 on the brake pedal switch free or you've just soldered new wire to existing pin 2 connection?

Yes.

It has a wire from fuse 4 in that position. This is why it's a good place to add a new wire, easier to access than the fusebox.

That wire from fuse SB4 which goes to the pin 2 on the brake pedal switch - what is the colour of the wire on the pin 2?

Black with blue trace.

Thanks. Yeah it's then the same black/blue wire on the fuse 4 in the fusebox.

Does anyone know would Polo 6R stalks with cruise control work on Polo 9N and fit its T41 plug?

Yes, as I said just over 24 hours ago.

OK, 3 more wires for cruise control on 9N side but strange I've seen on YT some people used Polo 6R/ Fabia 6Y/5J (>2013) stalks on Polo 9N. How did they manage to fit T41 plug of Polo 9N on Polo 6R stalks?

The 6R switch unit does have a 41 pin connector but the wiring diagrams show internal switching is not the same as required for the 9N1/3 ??

Maybe is wiring to BCM and ECU different. Also I'm not sure but I guess BCM is different and so its plugs on Polo 6R. I would say if Polo 6R cruise control column lever has 41 pin connector only problem could be those 3 pins for cruise control against 6 pins on Polo 9N because of pin layout for connection between CC switch (on, off, cancel pins) and T6y plug on Polo 9n  BCM. For example if pin 27 and pin 28 on genuine CC switch of Polo 9N are for ON /OFF does it mean if I use T41 plug from 9N on Polo 6R CC switch that ON/OFF will work? I'm not sure...

I've not bothered to look at the rest of the switching contacts in the 6R switch so there might well be differences with the other functions, fit the correct switch for the 9N1/3 and you'll not have any problems, risk wasting money on the 6R switch and who knows what other problems you will encounter and possible damage to the BCM or other components !!

I totally agree with you. But I was thinking if stalks from Polo 6R work without any problem on Polo 9N I would prefer to take 10 years younger stalks with potentially much longer lifetime because it's well known that left column lever and its high/low function dies very often. And I have offer for used Polo 6R stalks at same price as for Polo 9N...

OK I've gone through the 9N & 6R diagrams and the switches are wired differently not just for the cruise control, the Hi/Flash connections are different as is the horn connections but the biggest difference is the 6R switch is also connected to the CANbus system and there are no connections to the CANbus in the 9N1/3

Maybe look or ask in the Comments section of such videos?

Thanks for the effort. Then it's obvious that even if 6R and 9N stalks are physically identical stalk from 6R can't replace 9N stalk. But I'm still confused how did that guy from YT managed to make it work with Fabia 5J (2013) stalks and said in video that also stalks could be used from Ibiza or Polo 6R.

I got it on my mind and asked him but he didn't answer anything...

I think I saw on ebay.co.uk someone selling a cruise kit that was a custom loom plus one rocker switch and two illuminated pushbutton switches (which can be fitted anywhere you want, instead of being part of the stalks). Maybe this solution might be OK for you?

If it sounds interesting I can try to find the listing/link again

Thanks Pete for your suggestion but I'll definitely take used genuine Polo 9N stalk with cruise control. My wish was 6R stalk but after @nige8021 post above I don't wanna risk.
