Cruise Control Retrofit Guide For VW POLO 9N/9N3

Featured Replies

OK, here are some loom pics as promised.  I used a black connector instead of the correct light brown one for the XS3 connector, so I include details of how to cut it to make the keying work.

Wiring colour choices are unimportant, just use what you have or can find easily, label at both ends to avoid any confusion.

1. General overview:

Yellow wire is to the fuse or brake pedal switch, leave plenty of length (500mm?) hanging out and trim to required length when installing.

Extra length of white wire to go to engine ECU by whatever route you prefer, length will vary accordingly, as will RHD/LHD affect it.

Solder that in to the main white wire, and solder the resulting 4 connections to pins 2, 3 ,5 & 6 of the XS3 connector.  The one I had already had wires in those places that I could just solder join/sleeve onto.

Trim the keying area if using a black or red 6-way plug:

Label everything to avoid confusion or the need for reference paperwork at install time:

Hope this helps a little.

I did buy some repair wires with correct crimp pin for the (white wire) connection to the firewall connector, but haven't yet connected this to the loom. Having looked at the job on both Polo and mk1 Fabia, I don't think I'd ever choose to run the wire that way unless the dashboard was coming out for some other reason.

  • There are wiring differences between the 9N1/3 and the 6R as in there are 6 wires for the 9N1/3 and only 3 for the 6R this is reflected in the part numbers 6Q0953513 F or G for the 9N & same basic

Thanks Pete for detail explanation. You did the great job! Unfortunately before I had seen this I've bought stalks, connectors and wires at local VW junkyard. By accident or not I also bought black 6Q0 937 702 T6y plug. It seems this connector is more often present (I think it is used for tail light wiring) than 6Q0 937 702 A light brown plug. Fortunately someone has already trimed the keying area of the plug and it look like this:

You are sure that pin layout is the same on the 6Q0 937 702 black and 6Q0 937 702A brown plug and the only difference is this side keying area?

Also unfortunately I bought stalks from Polo 9n1 (2004) 6Q0 953 503 BJ. I could choose between these and those mentioned from Polo 6R. These older stalks just have on/off switch without cancel position like newer stalks have. I hope they will do the job!

Yes. I used a black one like this on my Polo, and a red one 6Q0937702B on my partner's Fabia.

You should push on and do the job rather than spending too much time worrying.

Yeah, tomorrow is Day D and the biggest worry is will I manage to disconnect and connect T11a plug without disassembling whole dashboard. On the other hand routing wire to wiring harness of the ECU T121/14 pin could be questionable because I'm not not sure where exactly and how accessible is ECU wiring harness from the cabin. Location of T11a plug is not problem so much as a access to the plug!

One point worth making* is  My BKY 2005 9N3 also appears to lack this wire, according to its wiring info. Would need to find a crimp insert plus wire to fit into pin 38 of the engine ECU connector in that case, I think?

Anyone come across this headache mid-job?

*  Maybe not. The asterisk marking this loom segment between engine ECU connector and firewall connector as absent on cars without cruise appears to be simply an error in the wiring diagrams. Nige kindly pointed out to me that there aren't with/without cruise versions of the engine bay wiring loom, which there would have to be if that wire/connection was really omitted sometimes.

Below is a pic of the engine bay side white wire location, this is in behind wiper motor, with lid off the relevant interconnect box.

First time I read this post its first part was unclear and has misleaded me by mentioning ECU pin 38 and this picture above was totally confusing until I looked again closely and realized that it's so called "compact connector" (back of the T11a plug) viewed from engine compartment. And I must say Pete did great shortcut by soldering directly "white" wire from ECU which was connected to T11a pin 10 with wire from T41/T6y plug and bypassed T11a plug from the cabin and unnecessary crimping pin/slipper (000 979 132) to it.

My question is - this "compact connector" is it accessible from the engine compartment without removing wiper arms, wiper motors etc? I assume from above picture that it should have some plastic cover or something similar, but is there anything else above, in front of it that must be removed to access it?

I've just edited that post to remove some of the irrelevant stuff, and clarify a little more how to get to that view of the bulkhead connectors from the non-cabin side.

I assume once you opened the bonnet and looked at the area you realised that it wasn't a 30-second job to access that point.

This is a view from further out, you can see the connector for the wiper motor, and the other connection box with lid/cover still on, and looms running along the bottom of the 'water box' as it's known:

Did you succeed in getting it installed? Partly?

Well I've had some urgent business on Sunday so I had to postpone cruise control retrofit for next weekend! Meanwhile I looked under the hood of my Polo and couldn't see anything similar to above picture. My Polo is RHD  1.4 TDI, but above bulkhead connector (compact connector) should be at the same location on all Polos  - from the middle little bit left to the driver's side. I can't see on above picture what did you have to remove to be able to have access to the bulk connector (wipers arms, windshield plastic cover)?

Those connectors are on the same side of the car as the steering wheel, naturally. Left for LHD, right for RHD.

As I say in the edited post:

"To get to here you need to remove the wiper arms, the plastic cover over the scuttle area, the wiper motor and mechanism and realistically the vertical metal panel that the engine ECU is attached to. (A few 'star' clips that just unscrew, a few T30 torx screws and a few plastic fittings here and there".

I think you should try to find a (local) friend to help you when you do this job; someone with more familiarity and experience of these cars.

Yeah, I was hoping that somehow is possible to do it without removing all those things (plus I need special tool for removing wiper arms) but it still looks easier way than removing the whole dashboard in case I fail to access T11a plug from cabin... Well friend's help is always welcome and also priceless feeling when you do something by yourself! I could pay local mechanic to remove all the required parts but that wouldn't have that feeling after researching couple weeks what and how and do it by yourself - if you understand me ;-)

  • 3 years later...

Reviving an old thread looks like, I am looking to fit this soon but don't have a MFD cluster yet but I do want to get one of those as well but first I still want the cruise control, would there be an issue fitting a stalk with MFD while having a non-MFD cluster? will fit that but later down the road.
