Just wondering if people wish they had a bit more luxury, i drove my mk2 bready for a year and loved it and i love driving older cars over new once as you feel like your doing the work. but i think i'm going for a 6n2 this time for a bit of comfort and ease just wonderd what peoples opions were :)

Sometimes yes, I would still drive a Lada though (yes I have weird taste in cars, deal with it).

There is a lot to be said for a newer car like the 6n2 or newer, like fuel efficient injected engines, aircon power, windows/mirrors galvanised bodywork so minimal rust problems etc but when they go wrong, in general there's not much you can do to fix them without having to hook them up to a "life support" laptop to find the problems, whereas the older cars are simple to keep running and can be fixed at the roadside with just a few basic tools.

I was in love with my Ibiza untill all sorts of fault lights started to flash on/off and it would'nt communicate with my laptop, but now I've fixed that and sorted the fault codes out I'm back in favour of the modern car

I refuse to buy anything newer than my current polo. I fear i will get comfortable and lazy with all those powered items, and will be stuck with modern cars and garage bills for the rest of my life. Going back to an old car after driving a modern one isnt easy as once you've had the comfort you tend to be reluctant to give it up.

Haha yeah i'm a trained mechanic and have friends still in the trade and have access to diagnostics so i might just become an other lazy bastard with aircon and pas ect :p

You can be all that and still drive an old car. The best work car I had was an 1989 Toyota Camry. Retro japanese armchair on wheels with all the toys!

Tbh you can get a cheapy code reader off eBay for about £15-30 which will do you for most fault codes. I'd hardly say a 6N2 needs to be plugged into a computer for everything.

Well I like the reliability and warmth of a newer car. I drove nothing but mk2s for 10 years (still have on now) but switched to a 9n when my last breadvan was written off. I got a great deal as my parents were wating rid of it, so it all came together at the right time.

It's a diesel, so fuel economy is great. It starts everytime and has had no major faults, costing me less money to keep on the road than any of my mk2s did. Tax is cheap too. Granted is considerably younger (still 10 years old mind) but has done more miles than any of the mk2s did. It's comfortable and warm (a big deal, as I hate driving when cold ). Lot's of space and I don't fear every pot hole or long journesy like I once did with my mk2. I'm sorry to say it, but I'm a convert. Still keep hold of the mk2 to retro rides and as a project. If you can afford it and have the space, have the best of both worlds

So good to be back in a car which has life in it, and has me genuinely partake in the experience. Driving modern cars aged me spiritually and negatively.

To be honest you dont need to go newer for comfort.

A mk2 golf i alot more comftable than an early polo, but still retaining that old skool feel.

Mk3 Golfs! They're like a Mercedes to me And because they are utterly worthless you can pick them up for peanuts, and they cost piss all to maintain!

I wish i could afford two vehicles! :p i'd love a project mk1 caddy tbh my mk2 nevedr let me down but it was just basic bit of luxury might be nice :p and beemer would be nice if funds would permit :p

I LOVE older cars, the way they look and feel and the fact it feels like your actually driving it rather than pushing buttons etc...

only thing that i would like is perhaps power steering when parking (as i do takeaways so short journeys lots of turning round etc)

What's all this bollocks about beind detached, spritiually involved and the like. Sounds a bit hippy to me. Seems it's cool to disrespect newer cars, especially by those who have no/little experience with them. Old cars are generally unreliable, uncomfortable and noisey when compared to modern day equivalents.

Power steering is one point I will bring up in that newer, electrically operated PAS systems are awful, giving no sense of where the wheels point or resistance.

I have to disagree with older cars being less reliable, I think mainly we're talking about polos here and to be perfectly honest my little breadvan has never let me down, whereas other peoples modern cars seem to be in the garage frequently with engine management faults etc.

I think modern cars look awful too, where's the style gone? They all look the same!

They are less reliable, it stands to reason. Rubbers perish over time, regardless. Things start to wear if used. Metal starts to corrode. These are all related to time, so being older isn't in older cars' favour. Yes, if you keep on top of things and do maintenance regularly, older cars are useable. But I have to do very little maintenace to mine compared the the old polo. Of course, different makes will have different issues regarding reliability. And I take the point that newer cars can be difficult to maintain at home due needing code readers and the like.

Drive a mk4 golf.....

I've driven alot of newer cars, used to be small package courier for a company, they use to just shove me in any company car that was outside, the last one i drove was an insignia CDTI sporty shite, went well but there so many buttons and space age dash that i didnt even get to know it after 6 hours of driving. Hoping to a VW passat to e30 318is was the best decision I've made in a while, it like an old polo, so much more involvment and you can feel whats going on.

My bro had a fair few new vws that were just cropping up problems left right and centre, the worse case being a jetta FSI droping it engine mount after 13k

I used to drive all manner of new cars for a living, yeah, some are alright, but most mix 3 tonnes of safety features with a 3-cylinder sewing machine and no feel. My daily is a modernish diesel corsa, and it's so boring to drive.

Mk2 Polos on the other hand make me :-D

Well my first car's not too old but it's a 6n with no PAS ABS nothing electric apart from the mirrors and have just brought a 6n2 with PAS ect and I don't like it because everything feels too loose. At least my friends wont be laughing at me as i struggle to turn the wheel 100 times to get out of a tight parking space

I fear if I bought a modern car, I'd fall asleep at the wheel and crash .

They're just too comfortable and seem to disconnect you too much from the road IMO.
