'OIL' indicator flashing?

Featured Replies

My 6n ('98) was serviced about 2 months ago, and I've covered over 1k miles since then. Last night I noticed that 'OIL' was flashing where the trip indicator is. I checked the oil level, but it looked ok. Once driving, the indicator showed 'service' next to the trip indicator (it was a 50 mile drive home last night). Anyone know what the problem could be?

Cheers.

First welcome to CP :-)

Don't panic It only means the speedo thinks you are due an OIL service the other warnings it will show are IN01 & IN02 they are the service interval warnings, there is a write up in the FAQ's in the Electrical section on how to reset these warnings

Ah - thanks! It mentions '99-'02 (I think 6n2 therefore?) I guess it works the same for mine (or similar - I'll Google). Good to know there's no fault. I don't know if the oil was changed as part of the service though, but I assume they at least checked if it needed changing..

Cheers.

Only just got round to doing this - but it doesn't work. I just checked the Electrical FAQs to see if the 6n2 was different, but it's the same. Anyone know why this didn't work?

This is from the VW manual for the speedo with the fuel & water temp at the top middle

With adjustment button for distance display on dash panel insert, vehicles 10.97 to 09.99

The service interval display must be reset (adapted) at

delivery inspection

every oil change service

every inspection service

Note Each service must be reset individually as only the distance recorder and time counter of the actual service can be reset.

Reset the display as follows:

– Switch off ignition.

– Press and hold button next to speedometer.

– Switch on ignition and hold button depressed (min. 10 seconds) until three dashes (- - -) or the next service appears in the display. Only then the service is reset.

– Release button

– Switch off ignition.

After resetting the service interval display the previous trip recorder display is indicated again.

Note Note that only the actual service type indicated on display can be reset.

To reset a further service, repeat the above steps.

If this does'nt work you can reset the display with vagcom/vcds

What does your Speedo look like? Fuel & Water temp at the top or bottom?

Where are you?

Speedo looks like your screenshot - revs on left, speedo on right, temp & petrol between them at the top. I'm in London (Walthamstow), but move around for work - a different town most weeks.
