We sold a car three years privately, V5 was sent away, cant remember if we got a letter back, if we did we cant find it as weve been having the house renovated and various major work done in that time.

Last year we got an untaxed vehicle letter, Phoned DVLA and said the car was sold, but after 3 years we had none of the proof of sale, told that it was a system error.

Got another letter a few months later, same again, on the phone explained again what the issue was, told it we HAD to provide proof of sale, explained we didn't have it, told it was our problem to inform them.....

Now were getting debt collection letter for the same vehicle......

Where exactly do we stand?

I had something similar happen to me & I had to give whats called a statutory declaration in front of three JP`s in the local law courts. Pretty serious but basically if you are found to be lying its either a term in prison or a large fine I knew I wasnt lying so no problem. That was the end of it.

Its the same with us, about a month before we sold it we purchased a Passat so I'm trying to find the Paypal transaction for the passat to give me a rough date.

I wish Ebay would store you old messages/purchases forever.

I know its not the same thing, but I've just had a tax reminder through for a car thats been taxed a for a few months now, and has approx 4 months left, is it possible theyve had a spat of retardation?

I've also found the date we purchased the passat, this would also tie in to when the car was last used by us as the insurance was swapped over from the 9000 to the passat.

Can't you just 'find' a copy receipt?

Collection company have been told that the vehicle is not in our possession and is not our responsibility, all other correspondence is with the DVLA any further attempt to contact us will be classed as harassment.

DVLA want us to write with rough dates of when the car was sold (which i have), and an estimated area it was sold to.

Dvla couldn't organise a pissup in a Brewery sometimes.
