REV limiters

Featured Replies

Looking at getting a limiter for my new engine set up soon

seen a few that look good however i really want it for one main reason (might sound abit ahh-boi ish or chavvy) but i love the amence pops and bangs it makes when hitting!

only thing is i dont know what the limiter will do until i buy it and fit it!?

anyone got any suggestions that will make her pop like a c**t?

I wanted this, but thought it was too neddy/chavvy to have it.

So, watching this! A two stage one would be nice, wouldn't be too hard to wire a switch in, where if the clutch pedal is pressed down for 3 seconds it'll activate and hold at 3.5k and pop and bang, then when dropped it'll launch to 6/7/8/9k..

I'm sure it's a hard cut you're looking for. I think.

might be! not bothered about about launch just when going to change gear at high end? like bwaarrrrppppp DOODODODODOD!! change? - similar to normal cars i guess but more popping and spitting?

I'm not bothered about looking chavvy its what i want :L any one think it is then tuff! love the sound

matees got a map on his clio 172and its quality!

I like the sound, but bouncing it off the limiter at 6.5k isn't my thing.

3k, yes, I can live with. But 6 is horrendous and probably soso bad for the engine!

would only do it wone or twice now an again just for sound!

not sure its that bad for the engine as its only cutting the spark?

i wouldnt know then? also i dunno how high i would have it?

aslo wouldnt have it bouncing of the limiter? perhaps one or two pops then change in 3rd or summat :L

just love it after seeing some videos and my mates 172 fly past (sad i know)

You're filling the exhaust with hot petrol and then igniting it and making a bang?

Look, get the exhaust hot (a few hard pulls), then cruise through town, 3rd is usually good - coast in gear with the ignition off. Wait 5/10 seconds and turn it back on.

Needs a few trys sometimes, but when the timing is good, the effects are funny. Bus stops are the best..

ahaha done this before pal! works great just want it going up the gears though, i want a limiter anyway but just want one that will make it pop a bit?

i know its not great for the engine but now and again it will be fine!

any suggestions?

There's a DIY one using a relay, but I don't like the design. Not convinced a relay can switch fast enough and thinking a transistor would be faster..

God knows how to do that :p

If I had a diagram maybe!

the engine always pops under braking if that's what you're after.

Omex make one which can be set to hard or soft cut and has a launch control button you can set where you want

Mine never really made flames with it though

Exactly the one i have :)

Didnt make any flames or pops on the polo tho, different story on my bmw, its like a flame thrower!

WE shall see what its like on mine nick ;) lol .

Just set it rich as fuck top end lol

Yeah but it's obviously not fuelling lol, look at mine now Jamie!

I cant. I'm in stafford and your in cov :( ..

Yeah supose its how it cuts the ignition .

Mega jolt most prob provides a much stronger and better timed spark so it ignites the unburnt fuel in the exhaust sick tings lol

I think the wasted spark maybe explains why mine makes fire lots now lol.

Sick, sound like a machine gun!

Not bothered by pops on the way down just at high revs when going to change? like an ordinary one on a high performance car but with exacerbated pops, not to bothered about flames either just sound I'm after?

seen the bee*R one does it but thats mental money?

any other ideas on how to do it?

I don't think making a diy rev limiter by simply cutting spark is a good idea tbh.

Most rev limiters work by cutting x amount of sparks out of y events, they are not cutting all spark off but only removing enough to keep the engine from accelerating past the rpm you want.

I'd go for the omex rev limiter and launch controll unit, seems very well priced at around £100 and you get the launch control for when it comes to the strip.

Pretty sure you can program in shift lights to come on at set rpms too.

Okay found a reasonably priced omex clubman one for sale, single coil etc

advert says: OMEX Clubman Rev Limiter With Launch Control

The clubman rev limiter with launch control from Omex features a user selectable hard or soft cut, this award winning microprocessor based design provides one of the smoothest cuts found on an after market rev limiter. This rev limiter has an additional button operated lower rev limit to reduce wheel spin from the start line and is supplied complete with a waterproof switch for steering wheel, dashboard or gear knob mounting. The limit can be set from 1,000 RPM to 20,000 RPM for 2 cylinder and 4 cylinder, 12,000 RPM for 6 cylinder and 10,000 RPM for 8 cylinder. This rev limiter is available in two options of single coil and twin coil and is not suitable for CDI ignition systems.

All Omex microprocessor based shift lights and rev limiters feature Omex's acclaimed method of calibration. Shift point and rev limit is set independently of the car's tachometer, thereby removing any instrument error by incrementing in steps of 100 RPM by simply pressing a button on the unit. Precise digital timing ensures response within one engine revolution. comes with set up manual

This unit is single coil

will this be okay for me?

I cringe at 6k, yet my engine could probably take 8k all day long.

Still, the odd missed gear has seen the rev needle venture into the fuel gauge, and an affordable limiter would be wise just for the odd occasion.

What's the absolute cheapest way to do it? And what about dependability?
