Heated seat switch

Featured Replies

Hi

Got a set of fully heated leathers from a calibra to put in the polo when its back on the road ..

I'm looking at wiring them up but keeping it preety standerd looking and mounting it in a blank under the stereo on

I've seen that the corrado has a switch controll but its adjustable, would this just be a varible resistor behind the switch or ?

Preety sure it will fit in one of the blanks as most vw's of the same age used the same switches.

I want this as its one, actually has the heated seat symbol and 2. I have the option of switching each seat on induvidualy.

Anyone else have any idea if this would work or of any other vw switches which will fit and do the same job.

I had a sugestion of using a polo fog switch as i could put one on then two if need be, but alot of the time its my missus whos cold anyway lmao .

Cheers

Jamie.

IIRC the VW seats have a control box on them, not just wires to the elements,

Whether this is because the switch literally flicks between differently resisted circuits within the control box or not I don't know.

Be worth pulling diagrams up for a VAG and the Vaux both with heated seats and see how they're switched in each

I heated the calibra seats up just via a batt and it seemed to just get hot and stay hot. weather i was burning the elements out or no i dont know lol

If the switch has a varable resistor of some sort at the back this could controll the amount of current going to the eliments thus allowing adjustablity .

In theory anyway..

Ill have a browse about the diagrams tho

Cheers :)

Yeah I thought that - but didn't know if the contacts in the switch were man enough, however iv got a feeling that Saab switches are a bit larger and have the resistors built in, might be worth looking into.

rob me one from jag lol .

Might just do the fog switch option .

You can find the oriniginal switches on german eBay, but as above they are adjustable, they will still work, just they won't adjust, they will only cut out at 3 or 2.

The Vauxhall u it's are regulated, meaning they have either a control unit, or a thermal cut out.

This is good for retrofitting, because it means you only need to run a ground and live.

My route would be to use the Vauxhall switches. If you get one from an omega rear seats, it is on its own little panel, and has a cigerette lighter in the middle, and the lighter also illuminates., as well as the switches. They should be 4 pins, 1gtound,2illum,3power,4 to the seats.

Also, using pretty much any other switch from other cars will work.

Search in eBay for heated seat switch.

Cheers dixy :)

Yeah my plan was to use a normal switch if i couldnt regulate the heat without a controller unit .

Just the main thing was what switches are available from that era of car . Eg passat, corrado and jetta the same size switches as the polo ..

So i wanted a oem looking one which i could controll each seat seprately :)

The corrado one does this but I'm unsure 1. if it fits 2. if the switches adjustment would work :)

The heated seats use a relay to very the resistance, if its put through the switch it wont last long. the switch also runs an inverted resistance, i.e. the higher the number on the switch the higher the resistance, hence why VW use a very expensive relay.

Switches for corrados etc are pretty pricey, around £30-50 but they do look nice.

If you need any more info I have a fair bit on heated seats, let me know.

ey ?

I thought the tempreture of the element would be controlled via a varible resistor .. Thus allowing more current through when the switch is turned up .

you've lost me on relay varing the resistance though as there normally just used to turn a low signal and switch on allowing higher voltage to pass through ( otherwise switch will burn out as you say )

What i really wanted to know is if the varible resistor is in the corrado switch etc or actually in the seats ..or a seperate controll box.

If not i shall just use a basic on off switch wired in via a relay as should be done with most things .

Sorry, you're right its a variable resistor. but VW call it a relay. there is one for each seat. the part number is 443919533A

To use the VW switch I cant seem to find a way out of using the 443919533A.

you can have them on or off using a relay, that will remove the thermal cut out that is also controlled by the 443919533A.

Hope this is a little clearer.

A relay?! Ahahaa. A relay is a switch. It cannot vary resistance in any way.

A relay would be used to switch the current on and off. It would need to be a pretty beefy resistor though - similar to the one controlling the fan.

How much current do they draw?

Edited by Adam-

like I say, vw call it a relay as it performs more functions than either a variable resistor or relay

it is the part which plugs into item no.31 on this ETKA image. titled relay plate.

cba with adjustabilty tbf ..

More hassle than its worth .

Just wire them up to a seperate switch in the dash so drivers or passangers can be put on .

On another note anyone got any ideas of some sort of terminal block connector what i could use, as i want to run a seperate live and earth off the battery so i dont have about 6 relay lives on the battery and can put my lives to that away from the battery tucked neatly in the scuttle tray.

Something simular to a terminal block on a amplifier but just with a row of live and row of earths.

I've done a bit of searching and can't find much.

http://www.wiringproducts.com/contents/en-...ion_blocks.html

The first one seems like a good idea, but you'd have to make bridges from say, 1-2, then 2-3, and all the way along. This makes the top bar live, and you tap off the bottom ones.

Didn't polos come with heated seats? So there should be a original switch? I swear in my manual it shows heated seats switches!

Above is all correct, when using a ve heating element. And yes the switch is a variable resistor, and this feeds the varied power to the controller (relay) under the seat.

This is not need with the Vauxhall seats because they are self controlled. So all they need is the switched power and a suitable ground. For the ground I wouldn't bother running it to the battery, I would just use any earth inside the cabin. If you use the Vauxhall heated seat switches then they are already the right rating. In the wiring diagrams they don't use a relay after the switch. So power runs through it. Also, if you use them then you fanget the original connectors, this way it can be removed easily. You might even be able to get the floor connectors, tthis is even beter because it makes taking the seats out much easier. I should note that I have used Vauxhall heaters in my 6n2 and they are brilliant. I did use a generic switch and a relay though, but this is because the Vauxhall switch didn't fit into the dash blanks and would look out of place. But on the mk2f it could be put somewhere away from the others and would look quite smart.

supermarioooo!!!

Yeah i've heard of this but I'm sure the corrado and passat of the era would be the same switch anyway..:)

REgarding the connectors I've snipped them anyway and just going to wire in my own generic ones so if the seats needs taking out its just a case of undo a bolt and unclip .

Adam part of my job is dealing with all the electrical wholesalers and I'm a calibration engineer .. I've searched and asked and most people I've asked said they know what i need but cant think of anything to do the job lol .. Might have to be a bridge job . Just be nice to have all my wires in one place so the scuttle looks neat and is easier to work on in future :p

Found something..

What i was looking for tbf but may have to use bullet connectors .. Be better with the fork types but

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ALLEN-BRADLEY-DI...=item4abf8005b1

Can run a earth and power off . And have it tucked up next to the fuse box and all my relay live and earths can be neat and tidy istead of the 4-5 ring connectors on the battery terminals lol

That ebay connector's a bit OTT ideal for connecting up a nuclear reactor  Have a look at Link For car related connectors etc

Aha litrally just the first one i seen .. Could wire up my house with that tho lol

Take a look at my mates power distribution centre on his fiesta when youre next up mate, pretty much doubled the wiring on his car from original so would have had about 238957289572 connections on the batt else.
