So i got off my backside today and got my drivers seat out to sort out the warning light.

Seems that the cables snapped right apart.

Not only that , lower down the cables also split and only a few threads of copper are holding it together.

Idealy i'd want to run new cable as i can see it going again with the brittle coating.

Any idea how i would go about this?

Those are the wires for the seat side airbag.

Get some wire of the same size (diameter) and preferably the same colours , then splice or solder the new wires in and cover the joints with heatshrink tubing (pref yellow) then to protect the wires wrap them in spirowrap

Further into the body of the car they have come apart and the copper is only held on by a few strands aswell as the split further up

Idealy i think i need to somehow be able to pull more cable out so i go right back to decent cable

Or somehow replace the whole lot , was tempted to stick some string around the cable and pull it though however i dont know where the airbag wire is routed

Thought it would be a simple cut , solder and insulate job but seems the wire has broken in a fair few places including down in the body

update:

Tried to crimp it as i have no solder but pointless even trying as i dont have enough cable / space to do it

Looks like I'm going to have to go grab some solder or somthing and atempt to solder somthing on , Unless anyone knows how i can run new cable to the seat

As for now , have to put the seat back in as we need the car

The loom should run out to the sill then forward to the dash then accross the car to the airbag control unit, behind the centre console on the floor. The loom should be easy to follow as it should be wraped in a yellow sleeving.

Glad i sorted the passenger folding cable today , hopped to get the airbag light sorted on the drivers side too... i was wrong , so wrong lol.

If you remove the sill trim cap in the doorway, you should be ablt to push the carpet back to see the loom

X2, as the front and back parts are seperate i think.

As it the passengers side, I'm pretty sure Tue wiring goes over the transnition tunnel, and joins with the drivers seat.

So you may have to remove the centre console, but this would be better, ad this way you can trace the wire properly.

OP says it's the drivers side

Contacted my local vw garage lastnight to try and get a part number for that loom

Funnily enough it was a mate who got the email

They cannot see the part on thier internal system so had to ticket to the main vw place which sent down the folowing part:

Q0 971 582 A

Although looks like what was mentioned above about coming across the tunnel

It maybe not plug to plug but rather a whole loom

You have to remember the diagrams are for left hookers, so for us the loom for drivers seat comes down the sill then accross. A new loom is an expensive way around a simple fix, locate the loom by the sill, cut it out then splice/solder new wires in place, afterall it's only three wires.

My bad..

In that case, it's a case of removing the sill and tracing the wires. They are held in with plastic brackets, and just unclip, it's all taped up, so where the wires enter the main Lon, use a sharp blade and gently cut away the tape, so you can pull the wire out until you see no breaks, thencut it off, and replace with an equalguage wire of the same length, thentape it all up again. I would tape the wires up, then use some plastic conduit tubing stuff overthe wires, this way they are Hardee to damage.

Going to ground my self when i do this too so hopfully nothing major happends. Last thing i want is somthing going off.

Going to get my dad to make the connection as hes a dab hand with wiring , I'm just messy.

Just going to figure out how to get accsess under the carpet , assume is a case of seats out , console out , side trim out?

Just an update - ALL FIXED!

Just encase anyone stumbles across this post for any advice in the future heres what i did:

1. Remove Battery Terminal & the seat as normal

2. Geta wallpaper scrapper blade into the plastic inside the car, From the door rubber side and poped the pannel off

3. Lift carpet , Folder the under part of carpet back for better accsess

4. Unplug the seatbelt tensonier thing (yellow connector with black plug)

5. You can now pull the broken wire and the other wire out.

6. My dad soldered 3 bits of wire in place to replace a section and give me more reach.

7. Insulate connections and re-wrap the outside of all 3

8. Put the seat in place

9. Connect the airbag connector up

10. Wipe the error code for the airbag via vag-com / hand held code reader (I had a hand held) - (I heard of some setting the bags off??? )

11. take keys out and pop back in and see the light go off.

12. Carefully wiggle the wires and make sure its all good.

13. Screw everything in as it should be

14. Pop the terminal back on the battery
