Don't know if this is the case with all polos but seem to have worst dipped/full beam headlights ever came across can drive with full beam on and barely anyone notices any advice on best upgrades on bulbs or lighting kits?

Great bulbs i have the gold ones as they have gold on them and were a few extra quid i thought why not :) i put them in with gloves on and everything didnt want to get any oils on them. After i fitted them my dad said you are stupid I have some here that cost 50p each(actually 2 quid but not the point) i shook my head and walked off.

They are great bulbs with a rather nice colour i think :)

Cool will have a look at them.. Best place to buy them? Ps is all the stuff I've been hearing about xenons melting wires true ect? As was intending to get HIDs but police wrecked my mates lights last weekend searching for the ballasts for them so a bit put off with them now

To be honest, I would uprate the wiring first, even the bulbs you have in now will shone like new ones if the wires are up to the job.

I made up a loom for my 6n and used cheap bulbs, but the output is actually, at least to my eyes, better then our gti xenons.

Not so much, I mean they were bound to their budgets, but mainly due to age, and material. New wire is made of a more resistant material, and would be of a superior quality. As Vw bought it in such huge quantities, they got the cheaper stuff.

Either way, renewing it isn't ever going to be a bad thing. And tbh, spending the money on the wiring, makes better sense then buying expensive bulbs, because if the wiring isn't up to the job, the bulbs won't last long.

Fair play, so it's more a case of cable quality as apposed to size. As obviously sticking a continuous 55w bulb on a wire too small would get the wire hot after a bit and be dangerous I guess.

the orig set up passes through the dash switch , all that demand going through the contacts , a relay takes the juice in a more direct manner and is the proper way to wire up high demands , god knows why they didnt use em

nope no realys at least until the early 90s ..not sure even later vw's used em for headlights

I think there is a relay, but it's before the switch. But even if it did have them after. The setup is still 15+years old now, so it's probably a BIT tired.

Another thing you could do is clean the insides of the lights. Think of them like a camera lens, a tiny bit of dust and the image will come out crap. Even if they look clean, open them up and you'll find a load of dust.

To open them, get em off the car and put them in a hot oven (not straight away as they will crack) for about three minutes, then remove and carfully lever the lens off. Let it cool and use a clean cotton cloth (old t-shirt is best) to wipe off the dust. You can try washing the reflector with water, but sometimes the paint comes off. To clean the lens wash it with hot water and fairy liquid. Then dry it off and fit it back onto the light and apply light pressure to seat it. Then put it back I to the oven face down for a few minutes then take it out and squeeze the lens until it doesn't go any more then let it cool. Combine this with new wiring and your lights will be awesome.

And yes,the wires don't have to be thick, just rated correctly. There are loads of websites detailing how they measure it, but I mainly use slightly over rated wire. So if I need 10a I use 15a wire. Slightly over kill but at least if you wanted to run higher wattage bulbs etc then you won't need to uprate the wires.
