a little help with my gearbox please

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have recently bought a gearbox as a spare, and today I decided I will open it up to see what treasures are inside. To my surprise all the bearings and races looked great, no damage at all.

Only thing that was damaged was this

These I think were around the driveshaft flanges, and as you can see they are in pieces.

Does anyone know what these are called, or ideally there part numbers

I think the gearbox is a DKE but I can be wrong.

They have a few names mate I call them a brass diff ring

Or on eBay I searched VW diff ring

Not sure if the ones liste for the polo are different to the golf ones I'm pretty sure they are the same

You can reuse them when they are broke asking as you put them back together properly as there is no where they can go

But for peace of mind and for less than a tenner I would buy a new one or two

I have a few good spare diff rings here if you didn't want to spend out for two new ones. PM me if interested...

Thanks guys,

I thought of reusing them, but there are a few pieces missing and they don't make a full circle

But as its a good box I figured why not change them.

What is their purpose? Are they to keep shaft aigned? And would these make a noise if they where broken/worn?

Also, the oil seals for the diff, are they the same as the golfs?

Thanks again

That looks to me like a baulking ring (some people call them blocking rings), if it is, its purpose is to synchronize the speed of the gear to that of the shaft, during gear changes. It is part of the synchro-mesh system.

Regards.

The baulk rings are a lot bigger and have serrated teeth to engage the associated gear. The broken item in the picture is certainly a diff ring, I have extracted quite a few broken ones of these myself now.

Yes, this is deffinarly diff related, the ones you mention are inside the box, and on mine they seem new so aren't broken.

I took the flange parts off again today to see if I can put the broken bits back on, but I gave up as its a difficult puzzle.

Not sure if this will help

Vic i would be interested in one of your spare ones please to finish building up my 020 syncro box

let me know and whereabouts in northants are you
