Hello!

I recently had a cambelt changed at vw, a clip came loose from the fuel pipe and ended up knocking the belt out. This in turn caused 4 pistons to smash through my valves and damage the "buckets". Because the original belt change was done by the good folks at vw they fixed my car... All I'm after is a gauge on what money this COULD have cost me.. work as follows..

Replacement of 4 bent valves

4 new "buckets"

Something to do with a compression gauge

Entire top end rebuild.

I drive a 1.8t of it helps..

Thankfully I paid nothing that's why I'm interested in what it would gave cost to do with all genuine parts etc.

The labour alone (being VW) for all of that lot would probably be in the region of about £500 - £1000. Add on parts and ancillary's, probably looking at another £300 - £500 I would have thought.

Id say around a grand at VW around 700-800 at a normal garage

I'd of said somewhere in the region of £1500. Good few hours needed to rebuild an engine.

It only bent 4 valves are you sure as it would have really been 8 or 12 surely depending on inlet or outlet side if all 4 pistons hit

It would only have been 4 valves if just two pistons hit the exhaust sides

I had a garage muck up a timing belt on a Mk2 Scirocco I had a few years ago, and I know it cost them somewhere in the region of £700 to fix the damage they done, and that was just a local guy doing the work at trade rates.

Since then I've learned to do work on cars myself and I personally refuse to timing belts for people needing work done as if something moves and you end up setting the timing a few teeth out its game over.

I had a garage muck up a timing belt on a Mk2 Scirocco I had a few years ago, and I know it cost them somewhere in the region of £700 to fix the damage they done, and that was just a local guy doing the work at trade rates.

Since then I've learned to do work on cars myself and I personally refuse to timing belts for people needing work done as if something moves and you end up setting the timing a few teeth out its game over.

Timing belts are a horrible job, done 2 but don't think id do it again. Sooo bloody longwinded and stressful imo

I would have said somewhere in the region off a grand including labour as the head was probably sent off to an engineers place to be sorted (this depends on the dealers really) and the techys job or they might make him foot the bill, unless he was loved lol.

Reckon he would've got the sack for it tbh. Dad knew someone at his work who serviced a bus Diesel engine got distracted, forgot to put the oil in then tried to start it.

They are as easy as anything else provided you follow the instructions properly. Just turn it over by hand to check nothings coming into contact before you try and start it!

Was all done to a loose fuel pipw clip. Went 60milws on it fine, 60miles with engine light on not knowing what it was took it easy. Then when the engineer came to collect it from home there was a nasty bang and he decided it needed a recovery truck. Took to a different garage but part of the same chain and orginal unhelpful garage have to foot the bill. Pretty lucky I could prove it was there fault.

ide say in the £1500 region and the majority of that woulda been time and labour costs. glad they sorted it for u without fuss tho. u were lucky.

unless the workshop was busy, it wouldn't cost them any more than parts as the mechanics are paid the same if they do 1 job or 20.

they may of claimed for the repair out of their liability insurance and all they had to pay is the excess.
