I recently brought a 03 1.2 polo E 55 as my first car which I love but being a well used car there are a few problem.

The steering pulls noticeably to the left but sometimes pulls to the right at higher speeds its not dangerous just annoying. I was wondering if its worth while financially sorting out.

A slightly more worrying problem is steering wobbles under braking at high speeds or heavyish braking but I don't notice it under 30 all that much.

I'm kind of stuck for what to do as I don't really want to be forking out a lot for these issues if its nothing and I'm just being picky.

The first port of call with these types of problem should ALWAYS be to make sure that the tyre pressures are correct. - Simple, but you would be surprised how often that is the only problem.

After that, it would pay to first of all make sure that there is no undue play in the steering.

The easiest way to set about this is to have an assistant 'shake' the steering wheel whilst you check for 'lost'motion in the linkage. The resistance of the tyres standing on the floor will tend to prevent the wheel from moving, but if there is 'lost'motion (for example, in the track rod ends) you will be able to see (in the case of this example) the track rod moving, but not the track arm.

Next, jack up the front end and put it on axle stands. Grasp the top and bottom of each wheel and attempt to rock it. If you find movement there, you will need to investigate further, it could be in the wheel bearings or in the suspension bottom (or even top) mountings.

if the steering wobble is confined to braking, the above may well reveal the problem, but it is also worth checking that the brakes are working properly.

Not only must the caliper piston be free to slide, but the caliper mountings mus also be free to slide, otherwise, all of the braking will be on one pad, eventually resulting in flexing and possibly breaking of the disc.

If you also get the wobble whilst driving at speed, yo may have wheels which are out of balance - A job for the garage/tyre depot.
