My car has recently made a funny whining noise when driving. It only happens when I increase the speed when driving and then the whining noise goes down when at lower speeds .. I'm not sure what is causing this noise, anyone else had problems like this on there polo gti 2001 ? PLEASE HELP as its annoying !!!

Might help if you gave more info Where does the noise come from front, back, left, right steering straight or cornering does the noise change if you hold the gearlever into the selected gear if it's from the front can you replicate the sound with it stationary if so where abouts in the engine bay does it come from

It's too obvious, nobody wants to get caught out, we're all trying to think of anything we can but the gearbox..

How's the noise if you declutch at speed and allow revs to fall to idle?

hahaa sorry forgot to mention the noise is actually coming from the front of the car , dont think its the gearbox as I haven't had any problems selecting the car into gear or anything,, changing gear is smooth . ... could it be the alternator?! ......

Could be the alternator or the tensioner or the other items on the belt drive?, simple to find out, just slip the belt off and see if the noise goes, if it's still there and comming from that area of the engine, could then be the cambelt tensioners, the guide wheel or the waterpump?

My car did it sounded like an aeroplane, it was wheel bearings

mine used to whine then started to be difficult when trying to change gear and then eventually refused to enter some gears at all so i got the gearbox refurbed and all was fine again

Mines just started doing this too!! I've got a 6n2 1.4 16V AFK type (it's a pain in my arse!!!)

My noise is coming from the cambelt area - I'm a bit worried , it sounds metalic (I've tried recording it but it just doesn't record the correct sound).

mine does exacly same thing, 1995 6n.

Driving on 100km/h can hear that whining noise, but its not loud. As soon as i lift my foot of the gas, it stops making that noise.

Vic's idea about declutching - Did that months ago also. It stoped making that noise.

My guess, it could be a gearbox, as mine is missing 800ml of mtf - Thanks to the Idiot mechanic who told me i need only 2l. Well, but i was bigger idiot by listening him.

I've just checked and for me it looks like it's the auxilary belt tensioner ( I took the auxilary belt off, ran the engine and there's no whine :) when I took the tensioner off and span it on my finger, it sounds rough as f****, bearings have worn out!! - simple fix, got new parts coming from GSF should be here tomorrow - now I've just got to get a new throttle body and I'm sorted :) (fingers crossed)
