Been told ther wil b issues with the fuelling as the 1.3.is mechanical fuel pump an abd is electronic, even if I fit the electronic pump how wil it run without ecu controlling the fuel?

ah yes your correct. the 1.3 has a fuel pump run off the cam. you could either use an electric fuel pump (there isnt an ECU on these engines), or you could use just the 1.4 bottom end with your 1.3 head

If I chose the electric fuel pump wil the engine run and drive ok?

The 1.4 cam is slightly 'better' than the 1.3 cam but the difference is marginal. The 1.4 casting may be able to be drilled for the mechanical pump but otherwise yeah, just use the 1.3 head it's otherwise the same.

Me, i'd use the full 1.4 and an electric pump - infact i did, with bike carbs, and had a right laugh!

Haven't hoared for at least two weeks so..

Would love to run bike carbs but with it being a daily car 15mpg isn't ideal lol

30-35mpg from mine.

Sounds good to me :) just need to find the carbs and get it set up then! Don't know anyone in south Devon that sets up bike carbs :/

I can't claim what i got on the above because i just got ridiculed before - lets just say it was more economical than any car i've had since. Including a brand spanking new 207 1.6 diesel.

What sort of fuel pump wil I need? The 1 on 1.3 I can't use as its mech drive an 1.4 hasn't got lobe on shaft to drive it and been told the 1.4 one is only 1.2 bar pressure wen il need 2-3 bar apparently am I right? :-\ and r there any other issues il need 2 know about or things il need 2 buy ( I assume 600cc bike carbs wil b ok if jetted 2 the rite size 1.6?)

Yep, ABD 1.4 in the Golf uses Bosch Mono-Motronic injection system, so you are looking at injection tank with lift pump and ~3 bar high pressure pump for the fuel rail and the ECU and lambda sensor.

If you are going for bike carbs the engine FAQ has a thread with quite a few suggestions. Carbs need high flow, low pressure and a motorbike carb pump (12v electric) is ideal.
